| | Sunday Sunrise - Characters That Drive You NUTS! « Thread Started on Mar 7, 2009, 5:36pm » | |
For this week's Sunday Sunrise, let's make an important distinction -- we're not talking about a specific actor or actress, but movie CHARACTERS that drive you batty. Maybe they're also played by an actor who you don't like, maybe not, or maybe they're played by multiple actors across several films.
But which movie characters drive you nuts?

Definitely the Fat Sidekick. The one who's always clumsy, kinda goofy, oh-so-jolly, never has a significant other (who isn't ginormous), and always works some crappy minimum wage job.
You know, 'cause she/he's fat.

I assume we're talking about specific characters as opposed to archetypes (no offense, BlackCat). In that instance...
The Party Crasher - The Hard Way
I can't think of a moment during this film that I wasn't annoyed by this guy. 'Twas such a relief when James Woods tossed him from the giant Nick Lang display.

Ah, well...the day I read and subsequently respond to something correctly is the day the Earth implodes.
Orlando Bloom's character, Will Turner, in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. I loathed every moment his whiny butt was on screen, until after he died in the third one. 3 movies and I only find him sexy after he's murdered in cold blood and his heart's ripped out. Does that make me weird?

No it doesn't, or at least we're weird together.
And here you took my answer, and said just what I was going to say. He's whiny, he doesn't really change or grow until about ten minutes before the end of the last movie when he's missing his heart. And I'd argue that, even then, it's the scar that makes him sexy as opposed to any difference in the character.
More generally I'd say the grating child character that tends to pop up in franchises: Short Round, Anakin (Yippeeee!) Skywalker, Alex O'Connell from The Mummy Returns, and on and on it goes. Ugh.

JARJARBINKSJARJARBINKSJARJARBINKSJARJARBINKSJARJARBINKSJARJARBINKSJARJARBINKS.
I just watched The Phantom Edit for the first time the other day, and although there's still some Jar Jar, it's vastly reduced. Plus, it was the first time all the political mumbo jumbo made sense!
So, I guess, also George Lucas.

The quartet in Body Count. They're gangsters about to reap the profits of a crime. All they need to do is lay low for a day or so, but they chew each other apart. If they could keep their childish mindbogging aggression in check, they would be fine (and there would be no movie). I'm shouting at the screen "For once, can't you just chill?" like you would shout "Don't go alone into the cellar!" in a slasher. Strangely, I still like the movie.
Rereading that paragraph I had an epiphany: What drives me crazy is the exact same thing that drives me crazy in internet discussions (elsewhere, not here in paradise): There will always be idiots and they won't be the end of us. But you, yes YOU! I can see you have a modicum of decency and intelligence, SO WHAT'S SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND: DO. NOT. FEED. THE. TROLLS?!
Trudy in the original Getaway. She needs to be somewhat repulsive, but they've overdone it. She is the single factor that most detracts from the enjoyment of the movie. To be fair, she has some scenes that work.

And the eyeliner. Don't forget all that eyeliner he suddenly put on. Along with the bandana.

You know it. So, basically, Will doesn't become hot until he starts looking more Captain Jack like.
And doesn't have anymore lines.

Yes yes yes. I'll add John Connor, Newt, the kid in Last Action Hero, Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds, and Rocky Balboa's son.

Renee Zellweger in, basically everything really, but especially Appaloosa. I know it's adapted from a book, so they couldn't just cut her character out. But she's so incredibly annoying. Calling her a prostitute wouldn't be quite right, but I can't tell you what she really is and stay in line with the Mutant Guidelines. There's this whole brilliant triangle between Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen and Jeremy Irons, and everytime she's on screen she detracts from it. The problem is, she tries to play the character as cute. It could've worked if it had been played by an actress who was really tough and willing to say "This is what I am, deal with it." But no, Zellweger has to try to seem all cute and sweet about it. UUURRRGGGHHH!! The rest of the movie is completely awesome, but if there's anything that stops this from being a Western classic it is Renee Zellweger.

Captain Cheney, the annoying cop in the Bone Collector, the really nasty guy that kept trying to shut down Lincoln Rhyme's investigation. He served absolutely no purpose but to slow down the story and give us someone concrete to hate until they revealed the real antagonist. Cheney was a pointless characters whose entire role could and should have been excised for the betterment of the film.

I hate the character of Armand from Interview with the Vampire. Nothing against Antonio...but he was just awful. Didn't really like him in the book either.
Barbara (Geena Davis) from Beetlejuice is also a no-go.
I actually like Will Turner...could chuck Ol' Liz of the boat though.

Ooh, I'll see your Armand and raise you Franklin, the wheelchair-bound whiner from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
