 Cherry 2000 contest!!!11
« Thread Started on Jan 25, 2009, 1:16am »

Yeah, sorry this is so late, but I kind of, er, forgot that I wanted to do it.

So that should give a pretty good indication of how excited I am, right? Woo-hoo! Go team!!

So here's the deal: In my review of Cherry 2000, I went off on a weird tangent at one point--I know, right? Totally unexpected--and laid out the basic plot cookie cutter for the Robot Girl genre of anime.

What I need from you, forum reader, are the names of the seven instances of Robot Girl anime that inhabit my collection. That is, if you think you're a bad enough dude or dudette.

I'm curious to see whether or not I'm the only anime geek 'round these parts. Now, you may be thinking, "How the frickle are we supposed to know what's in your collection? Regardless of our anime geekdom or lack thereof, we'd just be shooting in the dark!"

The answer comes in two parts: 1) I will be dropping hints all over the place--most of which will relate to the mysterious Seventh Entry; more on this later--and 2) with said hints girding your loins, you are heartily encouraged to cheat as much as possible. Google it, Youtube it, shout it out the window and see if any of your neighbors know the answer.

The prize? Haven't decided yet. I'll probably come up with something. Maybe a review request, although I'm still a bit tender from the last one.

The rules? Standard forum contest format. One guess per 24-hour period per user (EDIT: Guess period resets at 12 eastern). Contest ends on a date to be determined. In the event of a tie, I'll figure something out.

Tips: In the event of the anime having a super-long "proper" title; while I won't penalize you for giving the full name, I would prefer the abbreviated version. Rather than --- ------- -------- ------- ---- ---- ---- just give me ---- ---- ----; rather than -----------: --------- ------ just -----------.

If there are different versions of the series in question, or different installments in the same continuity, and you pick one that I don't own, I'll give you the point anyway. For instance, if you guessed -------- III, I'd give you the point, even though I actually own --------: Dual Matrix.

For those of you keeping track, that was two tiny, unhelpful hints, followed by me basically giving you one for free.

Henceforth, I'll try to limit myself to just one per 24, but here's a cluster-o-hints to get you started:

--The first hit on a Google search for "robot girl anime" will lead to a TV Tropes page containing five of the entries. Four, if you discount the one I just shoved in your face a second ago. Trouble is, there are way more than four options to pick from. You might say the page is chock-full of them.

--One of the entries received the Gargantuan Review treatment from me some years back, on this very forum.

--The Seventh Entry does not actually star a robot girl, but borrows enough elements to be close enough for government work. It is regarded as one of the goriest animes ever created, has nothing to do with dishonest elves, and is worth a whopping three points to the other entries' one.

Go to it!

1. Nuku Nuku DASH!--STAROPAL!
2. Steel Angel Kurumi--Bacca Wacca
3. Mahoromatic--Staropal
4. Solty Rei--Staropal
5. Chobits--Bacca Wacca
6. Armitage: Dual Matrix--Bacca Wacca
7. Elfen Lied--Staropal

Can Mutants play?

EDIT: Oh, and to answer your question, you're not the only anime geek pardner.

Good gravy! You didn't even give me a chance to use my Genesis "Invisible Touch" hint!

So yes, Staropal wings one out of the park right off by correctly guessing that Entry Seven is the almost comically gruesome Elfen Lied; one of only three examples of entertainment media to hold the distinction of making me briefly rethink my generally scoffy stance on the whole violence=mindwarp debate, as I actually felt quite dark and icky inside after watching it. Like I could've benefited from having a small Chinese boy burn me with a torch. Sadly, there's never one handy when you need one.

And while I'll readily admit to a weakness for redheads, I'd prefer one without invisible killin' arms shooting out of her back.

It's still anyone's game, folks! Arguably!

This one practically came dancing out of the screen at me: Armitage: Dual Matrix.

You're a real sucker for giving hints, aren't you?

Oh and....why are you even asking the anime geek question? You and I were discussing anime all last week.

Ah, a fine guess, and by all rights one that should be in my collection, but sadly, is not.

The who with what now?

If not for the fact that it would complicate things too much, I would give you a half-point just for out-obscuring me.

Ding ding ding!

Incidentally, Armitage: Dual Matrix is probably the grittiest, most Blade Runner-y entry on this list, so if you were like, "I need to know where the high water mark for gritty Blade Runner-ness is, so I don't guess over it," now you do.

Yes, but all I could really discern from that conversation was that you had seen the second or third most ubiquitous and well-known anime series in existence, and you knew who Steve Blum was. While that stands as clear exhibition of geek-like tendencies, by itself it's not enough for me to definitively judge you as being a full-blood anime geek.

Then again, I didn't know Star was even vaguely an anime geek, and then she went and guessed the hardest one like it was nothing.

And I don't suppose I am a full-blood anime geek, if I'm to be measured in Kaleb-level geekitude (and really, who can measure up to that?). But that article idea I mentioned to you came to my mind for a reason that has nothing to do with Warner Bros. cartoons. Living in Japan for three years made it nearly impossible to not see anime. I'm also 100% sure I know at least two more of your list entries (one of them came to my mind when I first read your Cherry 2000 review), and I have one guess that just screams "Kaleb" but you may or may not own it. Lastly, before choosing my latest headline I was considering going with "Benkyou, benkyou, benkyou!" Maybe you know where that's from, and maybe you don't, since you don't watch subs. Star might know (I was surprised about your anime knowledge as well. You are an enigma, Eunice). Put it down all you want, but that ubiquitous anime is indeed a fantastic one. I'm going to go all "Clockwork Orange" on you and make you watch it all. Someday...somehow....

I didn't have any idea what you were referencing, and now I'm started to feel all strange and worried. And I didn't mean to imply that Cowboy Bebop was bad for its ubiquity, only that everyone and their dog has seen it. Except for, well, me.

Did you just diss Cowboy Bebop right there?
