 Monday Sunrise - Movie Characters For President!
« Thread Started on Sept 8, 2008, 7:51am »

As the US Presidential election is heating up over these next couple months, I thought it'd be fun to make a list of movie characters (not the actors who play them) that we'd vote for if we had our way.

So which movie characters would you like to see as:

* President
* Vice President
* Secretary of Defense
* Surgeon General
* Communications Director

President - Andy Shepard from The American President. Unquestionably, we could use a guy with a sense of humor and humanity in the White House. (If we're going TV characters, Jed Bartlet would be my choice.)

Vice President - Malcom Reynolds from Serenity. A bit of military background and an all-around good blue-collar guy. A tad unorthodox, but a good leader all the same.

Secretary of Defense - Ellen Ripley. Sometimes you just need someone who know when it's time to nuke the entire site from orbit. Second choice, Snake Pliskin.

Surgeon General - In all honesty, I'd want Dr. Gregory House. I know he's a TV character, but I can't think of a movie doctor off the top of my head.

Communications Director - Silent Bob. Because that would be fun. Or Ruby Rhod from the Fifth Element. Because that would be hysterical.

Adama/Roslin '08!

Hey, they had Razor! Doesn't that count? No? Oh.

Well, how about:

President: James "Get Off My Plane!" Marshall
Vice President: Optimus Prime (the robot part captures the youth vote, the big rig caters to the blue collar vote, and if he's ever sworn in, the matrix of leadership can guide the way!)
Secretary of Defense: The Man with No Name (he's not afraid to mix it up but is even better at balancing his alliances with his enemies.)
Surgeon General: Dr. Yang (aka The Iron Monkey)
Communications Director: Lt. Uhura (natch)

Those are some excellent choices, guys! I definitely could go with you on most of those, but here are some more:

President: David Palmer (24). He's calm, rational, moral, honorable, and not afraid to make the tough choices for his country.

Vice President:
1. Jack Ryan (Patriot Games). A solid family man with a deep knowledge of foreign affairs who will stand up to our enemies, protect our friends, and preserve all that is right with America.
2. Thomas J. Whitmore (Independence Day). If the murder of his wife by aliens piloting city-sized mother ships can't shake his resolve, then the terrorists don't stand a chance.

Secretary of Defense:
1. Jack Bauer (24). See www.jackbauerfacts.com.
2. Jack Byrnes (Meet the Parents). He's watching you, and he will take you down; take you down to Chinatown.

Surgeon General: George Malley (John Travolta in Phenomenon). A guy who can learn Portuguese in 20 minutes could cure cancer.

Communications Director:
1. Jerry Maguire. He's a smooth talker, but he's earnest and honest.
2. Dwight Shrute. Come on - liberal or conservative, you have to admit it would be freakin' hysterical to see him pepper-spray Helen Thomas. Plus, he'd finally reveal to the world that Kim Jong Il is actually a cave-dwelling troll.
3. Paul Buchman (Mad About You). How much fun would press conferences be? His qualifications and equivocations would tie reporters in knots.

* President - Gandalf. End of story.
* Vice President - Either Cornelius from Planet of the Apes or Dr. Emmett Brown. I can't decide.
* Secretary of Defense - Daniel Plainview, if only to see him tell enemy countries that he drinks their milkshakes as he brandishes a bowling pin.
* Surgeon General - Zoidberg! (the DVD movies make this pick count)
* Communications Director - Juror #8. Give him enough time, and he could get any member of the press on his side.

President-- Ferris Bueller, because he could always convince us that things are ok.
Vice President-- Rusty Ryan, because what better cover could there be?
Sec. of Defense-- Walter Sobchek, because he's the only one who'd give a crap about the rules.
Surgeon General-- Simon Tam; he is very smart--"gifted" is the term.
Communications Dir.-- Ricky Roma, because the guy can sell anything.

President - (President Tom Beck from Deep Impact) The most calm, cool and collected President I have seen on film. Morgan Freeman was the reason to watch that movie.
Vice President - Snake Plissken, best back-up president you can ask for.
Secretary of Defense - Either Tequila from Hard Boiled or Nicholas Angel from Hot Fuzz. Tequila would get the job done and Nicholas Angel would do it & get the paper work done.
Surgeon General - I second Simon Tam
Communications Director - Nick Naylor from Thank You For Smoking. The most persuasive man for the job.

This post has been erased. Although we at MRFH welcome a wide variety of viewpoints and beliefs, we have no place for the hatred, venom and utter disrespect that I read here. Further action may be taken by the Administrator, however in the meantime, take this as a serious warning. Hate mongering of any type will not be tolerated.

Agustinaldo,

I'm not even sure I have the words to describe how offensive I find your post on this thread.

I am stunned by your hatred. I... I just don't know what to say.

It's one thing to question the wisdom and execution of the war in Iraq - that discussion has been gone over and over in other venues - but it is quite another to wish for the death and eternal damnation of the brave men and women in the US military.

I respect the right we all have to free expression - a right, incidentally, protected and preserved by those same men and women you wish to destroy - however, your comments are beyond the pale, and have no place in civilized discourse.

I hope that the moderators of this forum and other contributors will stand with me in completely denouncing all that you have said here.

I don't know who you are or what you truly believe. But, this type of thing is completely unacceptable. I realize that everyone on this forum may not be an American, but I earnestly hope that any decent person from any nation would categorically reject the type of raw hatred you have splashed upon this forum.

It was my understanding that this forum was to be as apolitical as possible. But even if this forum is to be open to political discussion (which if it is, I'm leaving - a love of film and discussion of such need not be political), comments such as yours should never have any place.

That's all I have to say. I truly hope you don't believe what you have written here, and if you do, that your attitude will be changed.

I actually read Augustinaldo's post this morning before going to work. I couldn't believe that someone could actually hold that view and post it on a public forum especially on the eve of Sept. 11. Oh well, I'm not the one to condemn. May we all have a blessed day as we look back on those who gave sacrifices for our country on that day.
