you've received a mix tape/cd, right?

a 30-year-old friend of mine confided in me that no one had ever made her a personalized music mix before. despite her attending uc berkeley, and being a general happy-go-lucky bar-hopping persona-around-town.

that blew my mind. i almost immediately made her one, with a generalized focus on friendship and subtle hints toward a romantic weekend road trip when summer officially begins.

still, though: BLEW MY MIND. in this age of (seemingly) everyone having burn technology in their computer/laptop, and the generally-acknowledged awesomeness of 'high fidelity' (which features mix tapes as a significant element and hints blatantly at their effectiveness as a sexual tool), i really thought mix cds were just being tossed around like water balloons. because, at least for me, i only threw water balloons at girls i really liked.

so, not to impede upon your personal life, but: have YOU received and/or given a mix cd? how did that go?

I have, but only to/from people I don't know, in craft swaps. I wish they were more common though, because they're so much fun to put together and receive. Plus, super cheap.

My sisters made up a Tough Woman Remix for all of us once. It featured songs like "Metal Queen," "Earl Had to Die," and "My Beloved Monster."

I'm not a big fan of mix tapes (somehow this term has endured the phasing out of the medium itself). Being the Supreme Music Nerd of the Universe that I am, I am a fan of complete albums. I think that the song selection and order can, on occasion, say as much as the songs themselves. Of course, I am talking about guys like John Lennon, Miles Davis, and Pink Floyd, not your random "guys with guitars singing about getting dumped and referencing Catcher in the Rye" band.

This all ties back to my hatred for people loving a single by the band that is not at all representative of the band itself. For example, I hate when people think that Frank Zappa was (solely) a comedy composer/musician because they have heard "Joe's Garage" and not much else.

But yes, I have made and received mix tapes in my day, before I became a pseudo-purist.

I did receive one AWESOME mix CD once (Oh god, mix tape DOES sound better) It had an awesome mix of my favorite songs. It had Wicked game, Closer, Living on a prayer, Sandstorm and assorted other songs of awesomeness. I haven't met anyone yet that would either want or really care for a mix cd from me.

As for having given/received mix tapes/CDs, I mostly received them from my sisters. I did get one mix CD from a male friend with some sweet songs, but I don't think he had an ulterior motive besides giving a thoughtful-and-personal birthday gift. I've made only a few mix CDs for people; a graduation mix for my 3 best friends and a birthday mix for another friend.

I definitely received a few shhhhaaaaddddyyyy ulterior-motive-laden mix tapes in high school and college, mostly from the same guy who, based soley on what songs he put on the mix tapes, didn't know me at all!

I do mixed tapes all the time...among friends, significant others. I'm so dorky about it I have a soundtrack for every quarter in college and some of highschool that I compile at the end of each season. Oh, and I was a part of a monthly mixtape club thingy. Geez, this feels like a resume.

mix cd exchange adventure is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!

and i have no problem giving out my personal information to the mix cd kids, because

1. i trust you all

or

2. i have no regard for my personal safety

although i'm still working on sending out my 2006 christmas cards, this project is the sort of fun thing to organize and NOT procrastinate on. in fact, let's get it started immediately!

actually, just sitting here in the rancho cucamonga library tech center (conveniently located in the heart of victoria gardens shopping mall: fun in the sun!), i came up with the genius "circle of distribution" method that will include everyone who wants to get involved but more importantly guarantee fun, frivolity, and that i get a ton of new music. hooray!

so here's the thing: if you want to be involved, pm me on here with a valid mailing address by like next saturday and then you will receive your instructions. if you have trust issues, i recommend the old "have it mailed to a vacant lot nearby and just check the ground there everyday noon" method.
