Usually a movie can`t be called a classic until it has been out for about 10 years. What movies from 1990 up until 1997 would you consider to be modern classics?
I`ll start off by picking Jacob`s Ladder from 1990. Great acting from the cast especially Tim Robbins. Great writing and atmosphere with a story that comes full circle. One of those movies that you notice something new every time you watch it. Puts a lot of so-called horror movies that come out today to shame. I'm tempted to put The Thin Red Line but that came out in 1998.

Picking up from Tim Robbins, I think one that most people could agree on would be The Shawshank Redemption. And I'd say Princess Bride but that's 1987.

Schindler's List (1993) and Michael Collins (1996) get my vote.

Jurassic Park. I know, I know, doesn't seem like one, but it was a step to the great special effects we have today.
I really think that the Last of the Mohicans stands out. Hm.
I would say American History X, but that's 1998.

40-Year-Old Virgin came out 2005 and Hostel came out 2006. It`s a little too soon to call them classics. Time will tell. Clerks is a great pick. I`ll add Christmas Vacation even though it came out in 1989 but it`s close enough. I`d also pick Miller`s Crossing, Barton Fink and Fargo.

I'm not sure if the first Matrix is too recent, but with the inovations in special effects that it introduced... how could it not be a classic? And I think, for the same reasons as the Matrix, the Toy Story movies are classics... I just wouldn't include the Matrix Sequels, only the Toy Story one.

Ditto on Toy Story. It was the first big CGI movie and now pretty much all animated films are CGI. It's cool because I was a kid then. I remember seeing it on its opening day, and it's kinda cool that when I have kids I can tell them about that. Kind of like grandparents telling their grandchildren about when they saw The Wizard of Oz. Except totally not the same... I also agree with Jurassic Park.
Pulp Fiction, Braveheart, Gattaca, Silence of the Lambs, Men In Black. Army of Darkness as ultimate cult classic. And I don't want to say it, but I guess Titanic.
That's all I can come up with off the top of my head.

Toy Story is fantastic on its own. I feel a strong sense of rage over its effects, though. It's like Die Hard - the original was fantastic, but we didn't need to be subjected to the million "Die Hard in a ____"s that followed. I can't help but resent Toy Story slightly for the glut of terrible CGI kid's movies that we are subjected to now. I would pick The Little Mermaid instead. It began the Disney Renaissance of the late 80s/early 90s. It may not be the greatest of that period (The Lion King, Beauty & the Beast, Toy Story - take your pick), but it's like Citizen Kane. I don't find Citizen Kane that entertaining a movie by itself, but its repercussions and innovations resulted in some fantastic movies.

If we're on animated flicks, I LOVE Aladdin. Surely a classic.

How about Dark City? That's an underrated classic if I haven't seen one. Oh, that and Tank Girl.

One of the best modern classics, 12 Monkeys. I've got to get that on dvd. The Fisher King needs mention, too. Princess Mononoke for how timeless it is for me.

blinkfan, I am shocked, appalled, and flabberghasted at your last post. But I respect the right for everyone to have their own oppinion.
Needless to say... I do not share it.
Batman, one of the first comic book movies I had ever heard of, and it was an excellent start to the comic book movie. Oh and probably X-men for being an iconic Marvel movie.
