it essentially a two-hour preview for a much better sequel that we'll probably never get.
i'm glad i saw it and i'm glad that they didn't do anything to make me go "they ruined it!"
of course, instead they did nothing that made me think anything at all. we sort of walked out thinking that we had just sat in a theater for two hours and that was it. i guess that's how it was when projection houses first popped up "back in the day" and people paid nickels to watch movies of a horse walking around a yard.
they pretty much had me when nicolas cage had johnny blaze drinking jellybeans out of a martini glass. i was like "if this movie delivers AND he's drinking jellybeans out of a martini glass: BEST MARVEL FILM EVER."
but then it just peters out. *spoiler* who else thought he was actually going to use that helicopter to fight the wind guy? who else thinks if he had, the movie would have gone up a point or two?

Yeah, I've not been hearing good things. Still, I've already got all the extras done for a review, so I'm sort of obligated to see it.
Well, I'll still go in with an open mind. If nothing else, I'm sure the special effects will be good.

Every single review I read says it's setting up for a sequel or two. Is there actually that much demand for a Nicolas Cage comic book movie? I'm not slagging comic book movies, but c'mon.

It's about average at best. Peter Fonda was pretty good though.

There is for the industry fans. Nicolas Cages name has been attached to just about every comic book movie in the last 10 years. The guy is a huge comic book fan and everytime a new comic film is announced someone like Wizard Magazine always has to mention him. This time they were finally right. I'm just really suprised that Sienfeld didn't get a cameo in Superman (at one point he owned every comic book appearance of Superman ever printed).

Well, I saw about a half hour of it and then I walked out with my uber christian family. Note: we knew the subject matter. I still am curious about how it ended but, I probably will never be able to watch it all.

Well, I saw about a half hour of it and then I walked out with my uber christian family. Note: we knew the subject matter. 1) You knew what it was about and you all still went to see it? Why? 2) Your family doesn't mind you watching slasher flicks, but Ghost Rider is taboo? 3) You left at exactly the right time. I envy you. -D

1) You knew what it was about and you all still went to see it? Why? I wanted to see it because I like the comic book and my mom loves sam elliot, my dad same reason as me and my brother because it his goal to watch every Marvel movie ever made 2) Your family doesn't mind you watching slasher flicks, but Ghost Rider is taboo? Actually, I am the only one to like slasher flicks, my mother hates them with a passion and my parents weren't expecting it to be like it was, well my dad was. 3) You left at exactly the right time. I envy you. So, I am guessing it isn't worth finishing. The only reason I left is because we were in a big city about 4 blocks from the hotel and the town is bad at night and my family also left. I also wasn't feeling it.

Having heard that it was anything from "bad" to "meh" and not having that much knowledge of the comics, I went in with almost no expectations.
Final verdict: The first laugh out loud movie of the year. For that I thank it. I'm glad I saw it in theater for the bells and whistles, but I don't see myself ever really watching it again.
SPOILERS
To be more detailed though, I wish, I REALLY wish they had left out the romance angle. I mean Eva Mendes' breasts were stunning, and that's about as challenging or memorable as her role was. Unfortunately for us all her parts were attached to her part.
Peter Fonda was very good, and I liked Sam Elliot. *mumbles* Should've played them up more then the girlfriend.
The effects were kinda dodgy in my opinion. Some things worked, but an awful lot just looked goofy. And I completely agree with Kyle about the helicopter.
I totally believe they digitally put Nicholas Cage's head on some other dude's body for that towel scene.

Great minds think alike? Now I can't wait to see the review.
*paranoid* ...Unless of course that's some sort of sarcastic comment.

Nice review, Drew! The Eva Mendes comment made me laugh quite a lot. Speaking as another woman, she must've been really sore, as hard as that pushup bra squeezed her through the whole movie. Ouch. I enjoyed this movie a lot, but I went into it with low expectations and knowing I was going to laugh at the dialogue. I was admittedly really into the flaming skull effects. The whole movie was like one big rock album cover with bad dialogue pasted in. I've only occasionally seen GR in comics, but before we went in I was saying to my sister: "Well, you know they won't have him be completely evil. So he'll probably try to renege on his deal with Satan, and succeed. But he can't be completely good or working for God, because Hollywood doesn't go there. So I'm guessing it'll be another one of those 'power struggle in Hell' concepts, like it was with Spawn.' " Yes, it was predictable. There aren't many places you can go with a supernatural antihero, unless you go with a totally different kind of theology than the Judeo-Christian-Perverted-By-Marvel version. And you know that's not gonna happen in Hollywood.
