Ditto to what Ms. Jellybean said about haunted locations. If you have the chance in your town, try to take a Haunted Walk. You may have to wait until October, but the one I took here in Ottawa frightened the living daylights out of me.

We'll try researching haunted locations. Please keep posting about any more suggestions for our story. Thanks for all the feedback.

I'd recommend you read The Shining. It's actually scary (unlike the movie which was just dumb) and does a great job at building dread (which I think is even better than being scary). Only one person dies during the novel and not until the end (other people die, but before the story takes place), but the other characters go through hell.
Also I thought The Messengers had a few good creep moments although overall the movie was pretty lame.
Just wondering, what kind of horror movie is it? A slasher movie, a ghost movie, monster movie? Just wondering because it would be easier to suggest things if that was narrowed down.

It'll be more of a ghost movie but not in the traditional sense. It would be more about the memories haunting the people in the story.

You should check out The Eye . No one dies (the ending doesn't count for what you're asking) but boy is it a scary ride through and through.

I've seen The Eye. Great atmosphere thoughout the movie. It's one of my favorite movies. I'll probably pick it up to help with our movie. Still not sure what to think about the remake coming out this year starring Jessica Alba.

I always dislike the idea of a remake especially of a film that is less then a decade old. This is especially true when it's a remake of an asian film starting non-asian actors. For example I loved the original Ju-On (Grudge) but it was strange watching it with Serra while still keeping the film in a Japanese setting. A lot of the time the story only works due to the lore that is associated with the country in which the film was created.
Americans tend to treat ghosts and spirits in a different light then the asian culturea so I am not sure how well the film will come across in the end. I'm sure it will be scary but I'm also sure that a lot will be lost in translation.
Edit - I do have to admit though that I liked the US version of The Ring more then the Japanese version.

That's the part that bugged me the most about The Grudge as a remake I think. I'd also recommend Skeleton Key. Parts of it are a bit shaky, but it does some things well and has some good ideas to it. I like the mood a lot - and nobody dies during the current storyline. Best use of creepy, scratchy old Record O' Voodoo ever.

Unnecessary thread revival:
Rob o' the Dead: Does the person you are collaborating with go to Fairfield University by any chance? I had a conversation with a friend about a movie idea he was pondering with a friend: "a horror movie where nobody dies" being the gist of it.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Strangeland. A creepy bod-mod enthusiast lures teenage girls (and guys) to his place via the internet, where he proceeds to give them the most horrendous piercings he can think of. Only one girl dies in it which was an accident because she was anemic or something. Perfect example of a nightmarish scenario that, even though nobody died, would screw you up for life.

I'll try checking out Stragenland. Chance are, our script will turn into something completely different from what we set out to do.
