We're starting a new feature at MRFH: kicking off each week with a Sunday Sunrise discussion thread on the forum. Each thread will center around some aspect of cult movies and cinema in general.
This week's discussion: what's your favorite movie trailer of all time? How come? And if you can, find and post a link to it on the web so we can all watch.
P.S. - Yes, I know it's Sunday evening, but it's been a hectic day. Trust me.
P.P.S. - For those lurkers out there, go ahead and register so you can chime in with the discussion! Don't be scared! Only Mike bites, and it's just because he's teething!

It's hard to say exactly what my favorite would be, but I'm still quite enamored with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy international trailer. If only the movie was that good... www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbGNcoB2Y4I

The Sin City trailer is a bona-fide favourite of mine: youtube.com/watch?v=YKFLrTYKIXkI had no idea what the movie/comic books were like - I actually remember scoffing when I heard there was going to be a new movie called "Sin City," cause its name didn't impress me much - so seeing the trailer knocked me off my feet. The amazing visuals aside, the trailer moves at a great pace, and it manages to show enough to get you interested while still keeping the film's major aces up its sleeve. Not many trailers can do that.

youtube.com/watch?v=wDiUG52ZyHQI know this one will sound tacky because it was so recent, and such a huge success, but 300 was by far the greatest movie trailer of all time. The movie as everyone knows is comprised of kick ass scenes, but the trailer simply takes all of those kick ass scenes and threads them together with some amazing music. I'd argue that the trailer is better than the movie itself. It's just that amazing. I still remember the first time I saw it. I was at a pre-screening for "The Departed" and they showed that preview. At first when they were showing the snow and wolf scene and the cliff scene I thought they were still in those stylized logo moments. (Think like the racing road showing a bare tree getting struck by lightning for Jerry Bruckhiemer Productions or the kid jumping off the pier for Lakeshore Production.) It was just that cool looking. Suffice to say that the preview had everybody hanging on tooth and nail for literally six whole months before the movie actually came out. A friend of mine was so inspired that he did the 300 workout and dressed up for the show as a spartan. (He was huge.) Few trailers get people talking this much about a movie. youtube.com/watch?v=Ur2h8hpd87EComing in at second place would be Jarhead. The preview was so cool. It was so well crafted it was almost like a music video set to Kanye's "Jesus Walks". Plus it also faked out a lot of people who thought it was an action movie. Very well made. I'd also agree with "Sin City" coming in at third. It's amazing how trailers can get you so excited about a movie that sometimes you like the trailer more than the movie. I can see that happening with Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem. The "redband" trailer is so ridiculous. On one hand you know it's just a gore afficianado's apology for the first one, but on the other you can't help but think they just gave away all the good stuff in the trailer. Tsk tsk.

On, no! It's a "What's your favorite..." question! I'm terrible at these. And someone already took 300! I'll go with Jurassic Park: youtube.com/watch?v=Bim7RtKXv90To this day I still remember the first time I saw the T-Rex's pupil contract. There may be better trailers out there, but this is the first one I remember really making an impact on me, so it holds a special place. Another one ('cause I can't just pick one) would be Millennium Actress: youtube.com/watch?v=vpGrD5wUzKEThe only other Satoshi Kon movie at the time was Perfect Blue, which, technically speaking, is okay, but he's come a long way. And it was seriously not my kind of movie. Also Millennium Actress is really hard to describe, so most of what I'd read on it was "Millennium Actress is an amazing movie, but it's hard to put into words." When I saw the trailer, I knew I had to see it. So much so I bought without having watched it first. Now if only they'd taken out the guy's voice, and just had the music playing it'd be a darn near perfect trailer.

Don't know if anyone remembers this one, but the Captain American teaser trailer has got to one of the all time crowd pleasers. I know the movie was total crap but the trailer was spot on and fairly simple.
The trailer starts out in darkness and a naration begins with a (very Italian sounding) German accent. While this is happening an object is flying around the screen at various speeds. The narator gives a speech about Nazi Germany will conquer all of europe then come to America. At this point the object that has been spining around stops in the middle of the screen and stands up, it is Cap's Shield.
I work at a movie theater and see new trailers every day, most of which are very uninspired. My boss told me that the Captain America teaser is the only trailer he's seen in which everyone in the theater stood up and applauded it afterwards. I only wish I could find a website that has it.

Jurassic Park; How I love thee.
I remember really enjoying the trailers for the Lion King and Pocahontas (strangely, I saw this trailer while going to see the Lion King)... Just because they were the full scenes for The Circle of Life and Colors of the Wind, respectively. Ah, the wonders of Disney's Golden Era. Damn you, Hunch Back of Notre Dame!

My favorite trailers are nearly always newer ones, for some reason. I don't have much of a memory for trailers, so here's a couple recently that have stuck out in my mind: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ6d3m-GFywWell, that one isn't so recent. But I remember sitting in my dorm back in August and a friend IMing me the link and my mind absolutely boggling. I must have watched it at least twenty times up until I finally saw the movie in October. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_qX1sx8WRUMy sister and I both want to see this movie very much now. Coincidentally, we saw the trailer when we went to see Across the Universe. This final one has rather adult themes/elements, so ye be warned before clicking. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K0OS4gCposI'm trying to decide if this movie is for real or not. Either way, this trailer has amazing camp to it. I think the filmmakers were actually going for horror, but the whole thing comes off as pure black comedy (to me). I do have one male friend who would beg to differ, but I just guess it depends on one's sense of humor.

Dark City is the first trailer I can ever remember really making an impression on me, and I still think it's one of my favorites. Also this Two Towers trailer with the first glimpses of Gollum set to the Requiem For A Dream music gives me chills even five years after the movie has come out. EDIT: I'll also say The Phantom Menace trailer was a huge one when it aired in front of Wing Commander. Looking at it now, it's not the best trailer in the world, but back in 1999 it was a knock out.

I know I've already posted, but I'd like to add Benny & Joon: youtube.com/watch?v=_qbbIgG87vUI love the pace of the trailer, and the way "In Your Eyes" is used is great.

It's pretty far before my time, but the trailer for The Shining is one of the most effective I have ever seen. The whole thing is just a static shot of the Overlook Hotel elevators. We see no characters. Only the most necessary film credits scroll up the screen to increasingly bizarre music/noise. And then- the money shot that completes the sense of discomfort and creepiness. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpeGXIBYvawMost trailers would have quick cuts of the different kill scenes or whatnot and play up the star, but The Shining's trailer pretty much encapsulates the sense of gradually increasing horror and disquiet that the movie accomplishes so well.
