is GENIUS.
maybe it was the midnight showing energy, surrounded by idiots talking and screaming much like the characters on the screen (albeit with much less reason for doing so). or perhaps the company. *wink*
but, yeah: absolutely fantastic. blew me away. now i have to bow down to abrams AND look forward to his 'star trek?'
DAMM*T.

I just saw it this morning (to escape from obnoxious pre-teens being horrible) and I too was totally blown away. I couldn't believe that it was actually better than I had hoped it would be.

Yeah, I'll join the chorus and say that this is an early contender for my favourite movie of '08. It may sound hyperbolic, but Cloverfield really set the bar for the year.
Between this, Lost, and all his other projects, I'm pretty sure JJ Abrams takes some sort of "talent steroid."

Just got back from seeing it about an hour ago...
and I will say I have to disagree with the lot of you. My opinion? It wasn't bad, but I don't think it was good either. It was "meh".
Just my two cents. It's not really a monster movie, it's more of a "survival" movie, and I didn't really care enough about the characters to care whether they survived or not. The only decent part of the movie was Hud. That's all that I liked, and that's only because he was kind of funny.
Sorry.

I have to go to the mall tomorrow to do some birthday-present-shopping, and I'm really tempted to catch another showing of Cloverfield while I'm there.
I'm looking up showtimes right now.
How did you guys feel about the shaky-cam? It didn't bother me a whit, but as the movie went on, people kept stepping out of the theatre (to take a breather, I guess).
One thing that I didn't like about the movie, now that I think about it, was the "Superman-Garfield" moment. That and the "we don't know what it is but we know it's out there" (or something to that effect) line were the only bits of dialogue that I remember thinking were really forced.

Holy crap, I just got out of this. I am...well, WAS shaking like crazy. The reason I say was is that my mom hated it, and voiced her hate the entire ride home, eventaully making her a Buzz Killington.
But yeah, it was really intense, unique and fun... I just don't know if i'd ever watch it again... the novelty might wear off after repeated viewings.

Yeah, I don't think I see it holding up on too many repeat viewings, but I really, really enjoyed this, too. My group of friends were pretty split: 3 loved it, 1 hated it, and 1 was indifferent. It was maybe ten minutes too long, though.

I liked the shaky cam aspect, and I don't think it would have been half the movie it was without it. I didn't feel bothered by it at all (and I was worried I was going to) and I think out of my theater I was the only person that left at any point during the entire movie (unless a bunch of people left after I left and the came back before I came back...which is possible).

With two Dramamine in my system (I learned my lesson with The Blair Witch Project) I saw it today. I really liked it. I’m really glad I went to see it in theater. Now let me complain (I'm playing it safe so highlight):
1)The beginning could’ve been cut a few more minutes, or they could’ve focused a bit more on the core characters. 2)I hated –hated- Beth. 3)The Superman/Garfield thing is a crime against good dialogue. If they were going to go down that road they could’ve used, y’know, an obscure character. Seriously, it would be of note if someone _didn’t_ know Superman.
What I liked:
1)I loved Judd. Having him as the main voice = good call. 2)First person shaky cam has always worked for me. And, because I allowed myself to get into the movie, I was on the edge of my seat a couple of times. Life lesson: When a whole bunch of rats run in one direction, you run in that direction too. 3)While I didn’t like Beth or Rod, I liked the way the ending came back around to the beginning. 4) Effects were very good. A lot of things could be seen coming from a mile away, but the execution was good enough to forgive it. But totally didn't see what ended up happening to Marlena. Ew. 5) Properly stretching out showing the monster. Not too much too soon, while not being frustrating.
Who they looked like (to me): Marlena – Robin Tunney (kind of sounded like her too) Rod – Michael Vartan
So, I liked it, and the more I think about it I may love it. My mother, who I took, was like, "Meh."

Marlena actually drove me kind of nuts because she looked so familiar, especially when I saw she had top billing in the credits. Turns out she was Nick Andopolis' disco girlfriend on Freaks and Geeks and she was Tina Greer (Lana Lang's shape-shifting, Fatal Attraction best friend) from Smallville.
I suppose that's actually not quite so interesting to anyone except me and my little fact-finding obsessions, but I thought I'd share anyway.

She was also Janis Ian in Mean Girls. I was happy to see her in the movie, away from the tyranny of Lindsay Lohan.

Brilliant film. Fantastic characters and some cool special effects. A really fun movie to watch and emotionally involving. Although the novelty will eventually wear off. I am eagerly awaiting this to come to DVD.

I finally got around to seeing Cloverfiled this weekend and I loved it! The special effects were amazing. The acting was belivable (although I have to agree with some of the lines). And the best part was that they didn't hold you by the hand and try to explain everything! I hate when movies do that! You leave the film with a sense of wonder and everyone has their own ideas as to what happened (just like in Cube). More movies should have that type of plot. We don't need a nice and clean Scooby-Do wrap up.

I loved it too, had a ball of a time watching it the other night.
(Minor Spoilers) I think what I really enjoyed was that it wasn't a horror movie, for the most part. The big monster is too big to do the "creep up and scare ya" thing, and the presence of the smaller parasites is kept to a minimum, considering.
And while I'm "meh" on the whole Superman-Garfield thing (I'm not that bothered, but I'm pretty easy to please) the "hobo on fire" lines had me absolutely howling. I'd call it even.

I watched Cloverfield again last night. Even though the home video style did raise some questions (such as what happened during the other five or so hours of the night that Hud didn't film), I enjoyed the movie as much as, if not more than, the first time. Plus I finally saw you-know-what in that last Coney Island clip. What are the chances of Lizzy Caplan running away with me and Helena Bonham Carter?
