The Nominees Are In!...and they're not very surprising. Sure, I'm happy to see Juno and Viggo getting some love, but, except for Amy Ryan, that is a boring list. And, although I haven't seen anything in the category, if Persepolis can't beat Ratatouille or Surf's Up for best animated feature, you had better believe there will be a one man couch riot.

I've already had my one man couch riot, for similar reasons. Why the (frig) was Surf's Up considered over The Simpsons Movie for Best Animated Feature?!
Not that I've seen Surf's Up, but still... another[/b] penguin movie?

Where the hell is "Hairspray?" I'm dying to see "Enchanted" too, but they couldn't even nominate the songs?

I agree that Persepolis better win, and I've only seen the trailer! But it's coming to my area soonish, so I'm sure I'll still have the same viewpoint once I see it.
I'm surprisingly meh about the other nominations this year. Just meh.

I'm just angry that "Atonement" was even considered for Best Picture. It is probably one of the worst, laziest, substanceless movies I've seen in quite a while.
Curse you, The Academy! Curse you!!

Really? Didn't Chicago have songs nominated in 2002?
EDIT:
::does research:: Nope. Guess not. Plus the category is called 'best original song," which should have tipped me off...

If Daniel Day Lewis does not win best actor for "There Will Be Blood", there is no justice in this world.

Perhaps they should have a new category similar to the best original/best adapted screenplay categories. I'm not saying, for instance, that Juno should get nominated for its use of "Sea of Love" (THOUGH IT SHOULD), but that any new versions of a song created for the movie should be fair game. The best example I can think of is "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge, which was the one original song but ineligible because it was originally written for Romeo + Juliet.

There were at least two songs that could have been nominated, Link's solo "Ladies' Choice" and the credits number "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)," not to mention the cast, the costumes, the sets...

And Chicago DID have an original song nominated in 2002, "I Move On."

Here are my predictions for the major awards:
Best Picture: No Country for Old Men
Best Director: Joel Coen & Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men)
(However, I think if Paul Thomas Anderson wins best director he'll also win Best Picture.)
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
Best Actress: Julie Christie (Away From Her)
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men)
Best Supporting Actress: Saoirse Ronan (Atonement)
Costume Design: Atonement
Original Song: "That’s How You Know" - Enchanted
Adapted Screenplay: No Country for Old Men
Original Screenplay: Juno
Animated: Ratatouille

I guess I'll post my predictions/hopes, too:
PICTURE/DIRECTOR - There Will Be Blood/P.T. Anderson (hey, Crash beat out Brokeback Mountain, so buzz be damned) ACTOR - Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood) SUPPORTING ACTOR - Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton)
That's about it for me, I suppose. I'm not too invested in the other categories. That said, it would be cool if Ellen Page won Best Actress, and I'd be happy if Michael Clayton won Best Picture (*scoff* yeah, right).

See, this is why I hate the Oscars. There's only one movie there I'd ever think about seeing (Bourne Ultimatum, which I have seen). That is, unless Justin ties me up in the closet again or I experience a moment of temporary insanity the way I did with Children of Men.

You wouldn't think about seeing Juno? Mistake, grasshopper.
Was slightly bummed that it didn't win best picture, though I haven't seen any of the others, so I guess I can't really judge. At least it won best screenplay, that was cool. Seeing a tough-as-nails former stripper tearing up was unexpected, but totally understandable.
