I'm sure a few of you have your own ideas which movies would've gone better with certain states -- let's hear 'em!

Well, to start out with, you got all my picks for Maryland! Good show!
I have a hard time associating movies with where they're set, but for some reason I can come up with a lot of movies for Louisianna:
The Big Easy The Skeleton Key Steal Magnolias I could just keep going.
Mississippi: The Ladykillers
Alabama: Fried Green Tomatoes
And then I figured, 'I have to be able to come up with some better Florida ones.' but all I could think of was Flight of the Navigator, Curdled, and Scarface. Huh.
EDIT: Pennsylvania:
Groundhog Day Trapped in Paradise
I'm going to go crazy thinking up movies now!

Louisiana will always be associated with Double Jeopardy for me. I know most of it takes place outside New Orleans, but the climax and that creepy cemetery scene are so strong that I always think of that city first.
And Manhattan is New York to me. Say what you will about Woody Allen, he knows how to make a love letter to a city like nobody else.
Chicago the city and Illinois the state always seem like two separate entities to me, but I've gotta vote for the film Chicago.

I'm glad Ghostbusters was chosen for NY, and Clerks for NJ. When I first read the premise of the article, those were the first ones that popped into my head.
But here are the ones I would have chosen differently... California: The Big Lebowski Florida: Bad Boys or Ace Venture. Both of them are set in Miami, but I still think they pretty much capture the essence of Florida (lots of explosions and dolphins...and sometimes exploding dolphins). Massachusetts: The Boondock Saints Missouri: Waiting for Guffman Minnesota: The Mighty Ducks Louisiana: Interview with the Vampire Pennsylvania: Groundhog Day

Nevada: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Alaska: Mystery, Alaska Washington DC: Independence Day Illinois: The Blues Brothers (sorry, Sarahbot!)

*raises hand* Can I just point out, for the record, that I am not a native of Wisconsin?

Maybe I just like to quibble, but as a resident of North Carolina I like Bull Durham more than I like Cape Fear. (And I'm saying that as a native of the Cape Fear region!) Or Cold Mountain. Or Loggerheads. Or Blue Velvet. *snicker*
All in all, though, I enjoyed the list.

How many years has your non-native shell resided in that locale?

I think a lot of the fun of making this list was asking other people their thoughts and constantly trying to juggle the movies I already had. As you all have demonstrated, there's a lot of great choices of many of the states (except cursed Delaware) -- and I can't believe I overlooked Groundhog Day. I went to college 35 minutes from Punxsutawney. Keep it up!

As much as I <3 With Honors in my geeky girly way, I definitely would have given Massachusetts Boondock Saints or The Departed.
And I Love that it's difficult to choose which early 20th century Brad Pitt period piece Montana should get, but good selection. It would be a toss up for me.
Great article- fun concept.

Oh naughty, naughty Justin.
Know ye not that Twister took place entirely within the confines of Oklahoma*?
If I were master of all I survey, I would kick Oklahoma! into the nether, replace it with Twister, and give Kansas The Day After. That way, Kansas still gets destruction, but on a much larger and more permanent scale.
*[weathernerd]Which also outranks Kansas in overall tornadoiness.[/weathernerd]

Great list! I love it! Yay for Clerks being Jersey! Groundhog Day would've been a great choice to, but I'm somehow inclined to think that Rocky was better. I suppose that's just what I get for thinking Philadelphia's the only part of Pennsylvania that exists.
The only state I'd have done differently would be Nevada with Viva Las Vegas, but that's probably just the rabid Elvis fan in me.
Really fun all around. I love it!

Kansas = Wizard of Oz. Even if it's a set and only in the movie for for a combined total of maybe ten minutes.
Texas: Lone Star. Definitely. Any Alamo movie. I was going to say Fool's Rush In, but I can't remember for sure. I mean, I think it ended up in Texas, that's what my brain says, but who knows?
Arizona: Tombstone
Oh, and really good call on A River Runs Through It, Justin. I love that movie. But honestly when I think of Montana I think Hunt for Red October, and rabbits, which doesn't fall within the rules.
