I don't know if anyone else here was addicted to Nickelodeon like I was in my misspent youth, but if so, you may remember the sort of "Kid's Twilight Zone" show called Are You Afraid of the Dark?, in which members of the Midnight Society would take turns telling spook stories in a sort of horror(-ish) anthology show. Great show, one of my favorites as a kid and part of the reason I grew up to love that genre of fiction... but, sadly, completely unavailable on DVD. Until now, that is; but, in a horrific twist exactly like those seen at the end of each and every Dark episode, only available in Canada!!! Argh! I predict Amazon will be getting a LOT of orders for this one from aging Gen Nexters... any of the rest of you remember the show? Here's the official news item: www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=5548-D

"Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society..."
I used to love that show! This is so great (except for the Canadian bit, pfft!). Now all we need is Hey Dude and Salute Your Shorts and my Nickelodeon memories will be complete.

I'll be accepting orders this weekend, my markup is very reasonable.

Meanwhile, I was watching The World of David the Gnome and that koala show that had the funny theme song: "Look up there, way up high, koalas in balloons!"

Pffft, I'll see your David the Gnome and koala show and raise you Pinwheel and the show about the department store mannequin who came to life whenever you put that hat on his head. Today's Special, I think.
(Man, I watched WAY too much TV as a kid...)

You'll never have any idea how happy this makes me, but I've been trying to figure out the name of that show, Today's Special, for years. Ever try describing it to someone who doesn't have a clue what you're talking about?
This really makes my day. I'm so easily pleased...
Anyway, I'd also like to point out the Grimm's Fairytale Classics and the Sharon, Lois, and Bram show as well. I can still know all the words and arm movements to Skinnamirinky (sp?) Doo.

"Today's Special, shout it loud and clear!"
I've been reaching for that one too! I was sitting in my parents' car while we drove to Seattle last week going, "It's like in this department store, and there's this guy who turns into a mannequin and back, and there's a mouse puppet."
Sharon, Lois and Bram did the "One elephant went out to play/upon a spider's web one day" song one time with a cartoon, and every since then I associate the Police Academy theme song with this song about elephants and spider webs.
Pinwheel was SO much better than Sesame Street.

It's out on DVD? That's amazing! I'm definitely going to think about picking that up. [checked the link] Only $30? What a deal. I watched that show all the time. There were a bunch of actors that must have just lived in the YTV station, because you'd see them on all the shows. In fact, I just checked and my memory hasn't failed me: Elisha Cuthbert, who everyone I know grew up watching on Popular Mechanics for Kids, was on an episode of AYAotD. Now all they have to do is release Student Bodies on DVD (best before-school teen soap ever).

I can still know all the words and arm movements to Skinnamirinky (sp?) Doo. My mom used to do the arm motions out the window to me when I left for kindergarten. Ah.

I'm still trying to figure out how my name got snagged on this one... sure it's in Canada, but do I want anything to do with it? Our version of the terrible Goosebumps TV show, only good? Of course you do! oh, man! i loved 'student bodies' so much! writing for a school newspaper made sure i was totally into that show. i can dig it! I had no idea that was aired outside of Canada. The more you know. The guy who was on both of those shows (you know, the one who was the sidekick on Student Bodies) is working for the Weather Network now. Total surprise to see him.
