For anyone with Playstation 1 and/or 2....
Due to unforeseen circumstances, I'm on an extremely limited Christmas budget this year. (The good news is that the new roof doesn't leak and the dog lived.) But the kidlings are always up for new games for their PS2.
So, does anyone have any recommendations for slightly older/cheaper but still totally groovy games that I might consider? The offspringers are 11(f) and 13(m) respectively and more into the adventure and racing games than sports. Kid friendly stuff please!!!
Thanks muchly!
Sue

Two words for you Sue: Used Games. That was the answer my parents had when I was younger and we were on a constricted income, and I was all about it.
As far as actual titles, I don't really know what to suggest, as I do not have a PS2. And the games I am familiar with (GTA, Metal Gear) are probably far from appropriate. Perhaps Ratchet & Clank? Some racing games? Final Fantasy?

Indeed... stores like GameStop, EB, and even Media Play are selling used games for cheap-o.

There's also the "Greatest Hits" program they do with Playstation 2, where they take their top sellers and start selling them for 20 bones. Anyway, without knowing what games you already have, I'd definitely recommend Kingdom Hearts for the younguns, Sue. (Well, for anyone, really.) It's the game that happens when the Final Fantasy series designers team up with Disney, essentially; you play as an ordinary boy, Sora, who has to go on a quest to find his lost friends and defeat a group of Bad Guys (tm) called the Heartless. The catch is that he travels through various Disney worlds to do it- you actively control Sora, but his two sidekicks are Donald (as a wizard) and Goofy (a knight), who join Sora to search for their missing king (three guesses). Plus, every new world you visit lets you sub in a different "guest hero"... in the jungle you can add Tarzan to your team, or Aladdin in Agrabah, or Ariel, or Jack Skellington, or Peter Pan, or Beast. Tons of subquests allow you to search for the missing 99 dalmation puppies, or help Pooh collect "hunny," or fight alongside Hercules in the Colliseum. Anyway, it's a really, really fun game (I'm currently playing it through for the second time). Despite being by the Squaresoft guys, it's an action-adventure game rather than an RPG, so no worries about it being too complex. And it's definitely kid-friendly- Sora doesn't wield a sword, but rather a giant key called the Keyblade, and there's no blood. Tons of FF and Disney characters make cameos, it's fairly lengthy, it's challenging without being mind-numbingly hard, and there's a sequel coming out next year. Highly recommended. I'm not one for PlayStation games, Sue, so all I can do is BEG you not to buy them a Grand Theft Auto game. The last thing we need is another 13 year old to be taught the virtues of stealing cars and murdering people to the music of the 80's.

Hey, some day they'll have to learn that picking up a hooker will cure bullet wounds.

Hear hear. If there's an EBGames in your area, you should go live in it, like I do. Or, you could always go online. You know, if you want to be all boring and practical about it.

Thanks for the info, you guys! I haven't decided whether to go internet or drive down to the big city yet for my shopping pleasure (though I'd better decide soon) but buying used has always been an option. I guess what I was looking for was a list of titles of really decent games that I could look for specifically that would keep the offspringers content in the Little Jr. Gamer World(tm) they have set up in the basement. (Complete, last time I checked, with an empty pizza box and several half full cans of soda strewn artfully around the room.) Kingdom Hearts sounds like a hoot, and I'll keep an eye out for the Greatest Hits labels too. Oh, and Pooly? I rented GTA last year just to see what the fuss was about. The kids can have that game over my cold, dead, hound-nibbled corpse. Or after they stuff me in an old folks home. Whichever comes first.

I think that was one of the secret levels in GTA: San Andreas, that you can unlock... stuffing the cold, dead, hound-nibbled corpse in the old folks home... or was that Crazy Taxi?

Hey, some day they'll have to learn that picking up a hooker will cure bullet wounds. Or that running someone over is a more effective way to make sure that you kill them, instead of using a machine gun.

Or that making cars pop out of thin air directly in front of you won't elicit any reaction whatsoever from passersby.
