Mega Man X broke ground. X2 stumbled a bit. X4 marked the first time that Zero was truly playable to an honest-to-goodness degree. X5 featured Guns n' Roses-themed bosses, and introduced the arguably-excessive ranking and upgrade parts systems that would carry over into the mega-hard X6.
I know almost nothing about seven and eight, save for brief exposure to the latter, and a couple of not-so-favorable reviews.
I do know, however, that in firm defiance of Brett Ratners the world over, X3 takes my personal cake. It took everything that was good about X, threw in a quasi-playable (and freaking awesome) Zero, and sealed the deal with the best music in the X series (music is important to me).
Apparently, the Grand Council of Floaty Hooded People Who Make Things Expensive agrees with my analysis, as purchase of an X3 cart--assuming you can even find one--will require that you sell your loved ones into slavery.

Dude, music is totally important, especially hardcore old NES music. Finally...a mega man music fanatic.. you would fit well in my group of friends. hee hee. My vote WAS going to be Mega Man X, but it was just too easy in my opinion. The music for chill penguin was awesome, though. I actually really liked 2, so I guess I have to pick 2. Or maybe 3...I can't choose!

Darn, I already sold mine into slavery to buy Oblivion. Nice to hear from you, buddy!

Dude, music is totally important, I know I said that X3 wins on music, but having gone back and played X again, I must nominate its first two end stages for spots on my "must hear" list. Nice to hear from you, buddy! Nice to be heard from, buddette! Good Lord they had 8 of those games??!? Eight???Nine if you count Command Mission. A rather neat little game, actually, and just the thing if you've ever wondered what a Mega Man X RPG would be like. It isn't of Final Fantasy calibre by any means, but still worth a play.
