So i'm a girl...LOL! and not to be too sterotypical, but i do NOT play video games, heck i don't even own a game consoul. However i have recently started dating a "gamer".... and yeah, I'll play with him a bit but I just didn't enjoy it....UNTIL...we purchased guitar hero! omg! this is the most fun game ever! we bought two guitar shaped controllers and actaully threw a guitar hero party the other week with 8 people rotating in and out. So if you haven't picked it up, you might try it...it's a bit expensive to start out (controller and game are 70 i think)...but so worth it, and Guitar Hero 2 comes out in December! yay!

Guitar Hero really is tha bomb. The PS2 definitely found a niche with the "party game" console (check out Eye Toy and Buzz for other such examples).
Guitar Hero, particularly on two player, is just awesome and all kinds of fun. It had my parents in hysterics and my mum can't even work the VCR.

I hate to ask the obvious question, but does one need to know how to play the guitar in order to play this game?

I'd love to get that for my youth group, but the cost is prohibitive. And velcro dart boards are so cheap.

Nope, knowing how to play the guitar is not necessary. It's a mini guitar...5 "fret" buttons color coded on the neck and a "strum bar" and a "whammy bar"...just press the correct fret button (or combination of buttons) and strum at the correct time according to the directions on screen.... You can "play" through different levels of songs (and each song comes in 4 different levels of difficulty)...everything from "i love rock and roll" to "iron man" to "cowboys from hell".... and my metal lovin' rockabilly boyfriend's favorite "more than a feeling" by boston! LOL!

I hate to ask the obvious question, but does one need to know how to play the guitar in order to play this game? Actually, it can be counter-intuitive My brother is a keen guitarist and found it hard because you have to time hitting the notes precisely, according to the game's speed... If that makes sense?

Guitar Hero actually makes me happy I don't own a PS2, because I'd spend way too much time with it if I did.
GH breeds the kind of sick addiction that makes you snicker at the poor fool with the fake guitar until you actually try it and find out it's not so bad. So you try it again. Then you find excuses to go over your friend's house to play. You start to recognize that you're in trouble when you see the guitar hanging from the game display in Wal*Mart and have to pull yourself away before becoming an embarrassment to your friends and family attempting Expert-level Bark At The Moon. Then you stop every time you pass Electronics Boutique at the mall because they have used Playstation 2's for only $100 and you did just get paid last week. Suddenly you're spending free time at work re-reading internet reviews for a game you already know you love and finally - just for a split second - you're willing to shell out $600 for the PS3 so you can be guaranteed to play Guitar Hero 2 in style. Just for a second, mind you, but it 's a long second indeed. That's when you know you've hit rock bottom. When you can't wait because GH2 offers the ability for another player to rock the bass at the same time, and your girlfriend always did suck at lead guitar... that's when you need to get down to your knees and pray for deliverance, for someone to lift the weight of this guitar strap from your shoulders. And if you're lucky, you might get an answer. It's a slippery slope, man.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need my support group. I'm feeling really tempted.

Good news Al - Guitar Hero 2 is coming out for the PS2! In fact, it's coming out for the PS2 in about 50 days time!
But before I salivate all over that, let me just tell you that I love this game with every fibre of my being. Its awesome, awesome, awesome, amazing, awesome, amazing fun for everyone involved. Of course, being the borderline compulsive that I am, I've playing it probably for at least an hour a night since I bought I 5 months ago, and STILL go on 2-3 hour binges just because its so much fun
The track listing on both the first, and whats confirmed for the second installment of this game is a well-rounded collection of tunes from the 70's to present day, and covering a wide spectrum of musical styles (as long as they have guitar in them).
The first game has 30 tracks from licensed bands, and 17 additional 'bonus' tracks from a variety of unsigned US bands made up of members of the game studio's musical team, as well as 4 difficulty levels - Easy for people just learning, Medium for people who've played a bit like DTH, Hard where you have to use all your fingers and the notes come twice as fast, and Expert for when you want to rip it up, metal stylee (like I often do).
The second game (7th November release in the US, 2 weeks later in the UK - curse you slow transatlantic travel) will feature 40 Licensed tracks as well as an unspecified number of bonus tunes, along with the cardinal selling point of the game, a chance for you and a buddy with your Guitar Controllers to play both the Lead and the Base lines of the song at the same time. So while your friend is tearing out the solo on 'Sweet Child O' Mine', you can be sure your bass-plucking fingers are going to get a workout playing the complex Bass section on Primus's "John the Fisherman".
I love this game and think it should be compulsary. That is all.

Just bought this over the weekend, can't wait to hook it up and jam through "Symphony of Destruction". But, had I known the new version would have some G'N'R and would be coming out in a little bit over a month, I might have waited! I *knew* I should have checked in on MRFH before making such an impulsive purchase

Not sure what song they are going to do but one of the two mystery bands will be Lacuna Coil. I'm hopping that the final band will be Metallica.

I don't mean to disappoint you Lordmoon, but Harmonix dev's have already stated in interviews that there are a number of bands who would not give permission to be included in GH2, notably AC/DC, Led Zepplin and Metallica.
Also whats the source on your Lacuna Coil info? I've been following the development of this game pretty closely and haven't heard anything about it?

Just wondering how well people managed to do on GH1. I've 5* everything on easy and medium, managed to do all the songs on hard (up to "no one knows" as far as 5* goes) and only have cowboys from hell left to complete on expert. I must say the day I finally got through BATM on expert was a happy day indeed.
Oh and here's the final tracklisting for GH2...(not including the extra songs)
1. Opening Licks Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil Danzig - Mother Cheap Trick - Surrender Wolfmother - Woman Spinal Tap - Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight
2. Amp-Warmers Kiss - Strutter Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box Police - Message in a Bottle Van Halen - You Really Got Me Kansas - Carry on Wayward Son
3. String-Snappers Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench Alice in Chains - Them Bones Iggy Pop and the Stooges - Search and Destroy Pretenders - Tattooed Love Boys Black Sabbath - War Pigs
4. Thrash and Burn Warrant - Cherry Pie Butthole Surfers - Who Was in My Room Last Night Mathew Sweet - Girlfriend Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knockin' Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
5. Return of the Shred Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of Primus - John the Fisherman Sword - Freya Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation Aerosmtih - Last Child
6. Relentless Riffs Heart - Crazy on You Stone Temple Pilots - Tripping on a Hole in a Paper Heart Stray Cats - Rock This Town Allman Brothers - Jessica Jane's Addiction - Stop
7. Furious Fretwork Anthrax - Madhouse Living End - Carry Me Home Lamb of God - Laid to Rest Reverend Horton Heat - Psychobilly Freakout Rush - YYZ
8. Face-Melters Avenged Sevenfold - Beast and the Harlot Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized Dick Dale - Misirlou Megadeth - Hangar 18 Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
That avenged sevenfold song is gonna be a nightmare to play (though i'm betting everything from the 6th level up will be pretty horrific).

Well, I did it... resisted the urge to open up GH1, once I heard the GHII was coming out. So, I returned it to the store, gome some credit. I'm heading out of the country for a bit, and figured I could wait until Nov 7th to get GHII. Plus, it's got some kewl songs Anyway, now I'm torn between buying the GHII bundle, or picking up one of the other guitars you can purchase separately. Does anyone have any recommendations? I may have to get a bass (or a second guitar) as well, so that I can relive my glam-rock-cheesy-metal days with my old college buds...
