Billy Joel's 4-disc Greatest Hits...saw him a couple weeks ago and had a blast...so I'm backtracking and catching up on some of his older/lesser known stuff..."Captain Jack" just blows me away...

If you like his more obscure stuff, the My Lives boxset is under $35 now and has 5 discs of b-sides, covers, alternate takes, and live versions of his songs. It doesn't all work (the album version of She's Got A Way? Blech!), but there's some really interesting experiments, like Only the Good Die Young done reggae-style, and some great forgotten stuff like The Ballad of Billy the Kid.

I've been eying that boxset for a while...and hmm...I got a music store gift card yesterday, so I think I need to go buying... some great forgotten stuff like The Ballad of Billy the Kid. ACK! Billy the Kid's been one of my faves since I started listening to Billy Joel, and he played it when I saw him in Milwaukee...the crowd actually chose it in a mock "election." I have video of him singing that...it was awesome. Though I always thought the musical bridge in it sounded a little like the National Geographic theme...

ACK! Billy the Kid's been one of my faves since I started listening to Billy Joel It's easily one of mine, too. I was really big into his music in high school but somehow missed this song until one of my roommates Napstered it sophmore year of college. he played it when I saw him in Milwaukee...the crowd actually chose it in a mock "election." I have video of him singing that...it was awesome. Sweet. I've seen him a few times, but he always ends up singing The Downeaster Alexa when we vote. It was great the first time but got a little old by the third concert. Maybe it's a New England thing. Though I always thought the musical bridge in it sounded a little like the National Geographic theme... Ha!

Oh man, I would've killed to hear 'Alexa' in concert...it wasn't one of our choices. Must be a New England thing. I also wanted to hear "I Go to Extremes," but he made up for that by playing "The Entertainer"...which I would love to hear an American Idol contestant or something sing...because it's so true!

Ooh. . . Zappa. . . Aah. . . Sorry, fine singer, but the name always makes me laugh. As for me, a recent redux of the Omnipresent Car Collection has me finding solace from road hypnosis in the sounds of self-titled albums of Flight of the Conchords and Starland Vocal Band along with Redemption's Son by Joseph Arthur and Ultimate Manilow. You may judge harshly now.

Just bought a few Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet tracks.
Basically, sounds like a band straight from the Firefly 'verse.

Stand up comedy has been the flavor for me of late, so I've been eating up: Mike Birbiglia's "Two Drink Mike" Christopher Titus's "5th Annual End of the World Tour" Jim Gaffigan's "Beyond the Pale"
By the way, anyone who doesn't know any of these cats can search their comedic offerings on youtube.
I particularly recommend Titus, because that guy would have to go on my top five favorite comics list.
Hmm. . . I'm going to go work on that list, I think. Ten favorite, maybe. Hmm. . .

The last couple of years have been a total dry spell for me as far as music purchases go, but a couple of weeks ago I picked up:
The Beatles - Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
On another note I can't believe that this thread is still active, considering that I started it a little over 4 years ago with very little in the way of expectations for its survival. I seriously forgot that it even existed until about 30 minutes ago.

Lily Allen - "The Fear" (Explicit Version) Santogold - "L.E.S. Artistes"
