Just curious... is anyone planning on getting this? I mean, on the one hand, it's incredibly tempting- C&H is definitely one of the great comic strips of our time (right up there with The Far Side and Bloom County in my book), and the idea of having a nice hardcover collection of every strip Bill Watterson ever did is appealing; Lady Luck just got me the Complete Far Side for my birthday, and it is sweetness and a half.
But on the other hand, the Far Side collection contained lots of strips that had never been in previous books; whereas C&H has been entirely collected in books, all of which I already own. We don't know what kind of special features it might have, but 150 bones is a lot for something you've already essentially got, even if it is in a nice new format. Thoughts? Anybody planning on picking it up? And should they do a Complete Bloom County/Outland now, or wait until whenever Berke Breathed stops doing Opus and collect those in there as well?

Ooooooh. I didn't really know this was out there. Hmmm. This is one to think on. Both Duckie and I love Calvin and Hobbes (obviously on Duckie, but I've always been a huge fan, too), and we've got the Far Side collection too. However, we didn't pay the full price for the Far Side collection. Is BJs or Costco selling the C&H collection? Or is there somewhere it can be picked up cheaper? I agree- 150 is a lot for something that's out in the books (and the books are often on the sales racks if you don't own them all). But the spiffy format... and we've got a bookcase we're slowly filling with hardcovers of our all-time favorite books, which is where The Far Side resides... hmmmm. And I've never been a huge fan of Berkley Breathed- he's very hit and miss with me- so meh on that debate

Wow... $150 is pretty brutal, even for something that tempting. That's like halfway to an XBox Cripple!
I wonder how many pages Watterson's collected works takes up. I have to admit, steep price tag or not, that would be a perfect Christmas or wedding gift for PoolGirl.

I can't see shelling out $150 for this. I'd just hang on to the books I already have and wait until the price goes down. But then, I'm frugal. Or maybe just poor.

that would be a perfect Christmas or wedding gift for PoolGirl. Whoops. And by "wedding gift", I mean "birthday gift". Freudian slip there. Where you say one thing and you mean your mother.

Bought and paid for. Despite promising to love the bookstore I was employed in forever, amazon.com had a preorder sale 60% off, and I buckled. I'm sure they understand.

Had or has a sale? I would pay $60 for the book.

Had. I bought mine in late April or early May (I believe) and don't see any evidence that it's still going on. They do still list it at a pretty competitive price, though.

A new wrinkle has entered my ongoing moral dilemma over whether to drop the coin for this bad boy or not. Having recently taken on a seasonal job at Barnes and Noble, I've learned that -- in addition to our regular 30% discount -- there's an Employee Appreciation Week sometime between now and Christmas where we get an extra 10% off everything in the store. Now, knowing that the darn thing retails for $120 in the store, at 40% off, that's 72 bones- hefty, but more reasonable. I had planned to wait a couple of years until the price dropped, but I won't have a discount then and I don't know that anywhere will be selling it for less than that, even in a couple of years. Rrrrgggghhh... IT TESTS ME!!!

Can you drive to Delaware, go to a B&N there, and save another $5 in tax? Seriously, that sounds like a great deal to me... I'd be all over that, like Arthur Dent on a cup of tea

I love Foxtrot. Aside from the Big 3 of Far Side, C&H, and Bloom County, probably my favorite modern comic strip.
A snag entered my plan to obtain the treasured volume, by the way- it turns out the employee discount supercedes the normal 20% off, so it was going to be over $90 after tax. I passed, and I'll just hope they start going on clearance in a couple years' time.

You just listed my top four, Drew... are you channelin' me? Bummer about not getting the hardcover series - I'm also waiting for it to come down in price. Same thing happened with the Far Side collection - ultimately I caught a really good sale, and picked it up (and no, it hadn't fallen off the back of a truck in Joisey). By the way, Poolman and Drew - the pictures you're using in your sigs look eerily familiar... does this mean that the Mutant Summit article is coming out soon? I mean, after all, they finally allow me to rent cars in Detroit once again... so I was wondering if it someone was dusting off the unfinished work...

Haha... I saw that and thought of you, Duck. Did my sig give away my appreciation for all things Calvin?
