Hmm - good question.
1. The Cruxshadows (little known German EBM group - apparently play Dragoncon every year and do a really good show).
2. System of a Down
3. R.E.M.
They were all good.
However, the best live act I've ever seen are Muse. Really, really good.

5 - Maroon 5 - I was 16 at the time, & even though I wasn't a huge fan before the show, they were amazing live! I became a fan after that night!
4 - Mr Greengenes - I've been to maybe 7 of their shows in the past 2 years & I can't say which one was the best, but all of them were uniquely incredible & would each be a contender for this spot.
3 - Harry & the Potters - I saw them at the New York Public Library last May. It was quite possibly the most fun night I've ever had. A lot of it had to do with Ghostbusters.
2 - Warped Tour '04 - Since I usually pretend I never saw *NSYNC live before, I consider this my first "real" concert. My 2 favorite bands at the time were NOFX, who only played at the Camden show on that tour, so it was pretty cool that I got to see them, & Yellowcard, who I got to see from exactly center stage, pushed up against the chain-link fence. That experience really changed me.
1 - Queen & Paul Rodgers - Need I say more?

Foo Fighters and Weezer, October 2005
Just when you thought it couldn't get any better than that... Roger Taylor from Queen sits in on drums for the encore!

If I had a dime for every time I saw them in the 90's, I'd be rich right now ;D I used to catch them, Love Seed Mama Jump, or Strange as Angels every weekend (and many weeknights as well), when I was young, single and didn't care if I got two hours sleep before work. As for major acts, best concert was free.... Blues Traveler in DC. Played more songs than you'd get at a Springsteen show We left into the encore (friends had to get to work the next morning)... but when we pulled into their driveway an hour later, the radio said that they had just finished up their third encore set. What I saw was awesome, I wish I had seen the rest, though. A close second would be when I did crowd control at a REM / 10,000 maniacs concert - this was on the Document tour, they were all soooo young. I was 5 rows back. Many, many other awesome experiences...

I've never heard of Mr. Greengenes... do they have anything to do with Frank Zappa? They're a cover band from the Philly suburbs that have been around for something like 15+ years... I think there's been a number of people who have joined and left, but the band still goes on. They play (or used to play) alt rock. And yea, apparently they took their name from the Frank Zappa song.

Sublime. 10 feet from the stage. 1995. I had NEVER heard of them before that night but they were AWESOME. Concert ended, I went home, back to school etc. A week later my friend dan plays me a cassette tape that he pilfered from K-mart. Said Album... 40 oz. to freedom.
I became hooked on them immediately. A few months later, they release their album "Sublime" ( the "tattoo" album as I call it) We all know the rest. "Santeria" and "What I got" take off, MTV plays the "Santeria" video every 2 seconds, MTV tries to kill Sublime just like they ALMOST killed Green Day. Lead singer Brad Noell overdoses on heroin, no more Sublime. But the concert was awesome.

On a side note:
40oz to freedom is a FAR superior album to the self-titled album. I'm not the only music fan who gets irritated when a band's previous work is overshadowed by their later work that gets all the massive attention and fair-weather fans.

this is such a weird question, if only because the most recent (and therefore, for the moment, 'best!') concert for me was the new pornographers/tegan and sara/death cab for cutie at the hollywood bowl this past sunday.
it was absolutely amazing. my friends talked me into paying insane amounts of money for our tickets, which seemed lame a couple months ago, but then when we were in the VIP seats three rows from the stage, and every artist walked right by us, it was like "okay, this is cool."
BUT, so many music blogs and the like analyzed the show as too subdued and not much fun at all. my take is that if you've seen them a bunch of times before, of course one would feel robbed if the energy doesn't match prior performances. but i heard the same sort of thing about the shins and the decemberists (bad live shows) and both their may shows blew me away!
perhaps i'm just easily amused, though. (see: recent twilight review)
i am a loser.
