i have six of those cd wallets that hold 96 cds each. a lot of those cds are ones i got for free, used, burned from friends, or whatever. quite a few have only a few, or even one, song(s) that i wanted.
but see, i have 95% of all my music on my powerbook in itunes, and of course in my ipod.
my question: is it worth it to hold onto those cds, or just dump them?
i seriously can't think of any reason that i would want to hold on to a lot of the lesser cds. obviously, the bigger and better albums (u2's achtung baby, etc.) will be retained, but otherwise, i say get rid of them.
but, if anyone has a good reason NOT to dump them, i'd love to hear it, you know? i'm so lost (in terms of guidance, that is)!

I'd say hold on to the cds, just in case you lose the files on your powerbook and your ipod, if that's possible. But sometimes it's good to just get rid of what you don't listen to. I did that a while ago myself, with moderate success. Why won't the used cd store take my mudvayne albums? WHY?!
At the same time, maybe you should give some of your older albums a spin. Maybe there's something to like that you overlooked.

I'm definitely FOR cds. there is NOTHING tangible or cool about mp3s, and I like having a cd to hol don to with liner notes and such. (I actually really like records the most). cds are better if you truly love the band and want their albums. soon there will BE no cds and no albums and no originality and bands will suck and just have 1 and 2 flavor of the month songs (cough falloutboy cough). Screw mp3s! I have an mp3 player but only to put my cds on. I hate people that buy a cd and listen to two songs, it's so asinine. I like to envelop myself in a whole album, not just a few select songs. I don't know, I can't really explain it right on the internet.

If you're looking to get rid of them, i.e., selling them to a used cd shop, I'd rid 'em all and store the mp3's on a few quality burnt dvd's and store those in a hard-shelled cd case or something. OR just rip the particular tracks that you like on each cd and store them like so. I have a butt load of cd's (actual cd's, not burnt copies) and I've thought of doing this exact same thing.

I keep mine, probably far longer than necessary (heck, I just finally got rid of my 1000+ VHS collection this year). I think the one good thing CDs are for now is to play them in the car -- the radio broadcast thing I set up to my iPod doesn't work well (the Detroit radio station signals are too strong to overcome).

dajayman is right, store the most important songs or CD on a couple of DVDs and be off with them. As much as a cool storing technology MP3s are, you always need a back-up, a tangible, material, physical back-up, what happens if u just happen to be in the range of an EMP shockwave when you;re MP3 players are working.
I say this out of personal experience, I thought: nah why should I burn on a CD a couple of ireplaceble documents from my HDD? Well it turns out that my HDD crashed in such a manner that NOTHING could be saved, regenerated, restored, recovered, more synonims. So bottom line, keep a back-up, wich u can touch, smell and dust.

Yeah, I don't trust MP3s, either (nor can I afford all that fancy equipment). Keep what CDs you want, then donate the rest to a used CD store or thrift shop. Besides, you never know when you're going to run into something you can't find easily on the radio or online (this coming from someone who listens to jazz, easy listening, and obscure showtunes in addition to her classic rock addiction).
