Last night, as I was drifting off to sleep and had some song or another stuck in my head, I came to a quiet revelation. I really, really like it when artists are talented enough to come up with new words in a chorus of a song for each iteration that it goes through, and creative verses that go beyond just two verses, a few identical choruses and some pointless filler.
Does this make sense? It just seems to me that many songwriters kind of get into a comfortable rut by figuring out the pattern of words to fit a chorus, and then they wash their hands of the deal, instead of pushing themselves to go further as the song progresses.

Unfortunately, in popular music simpler has become better. It has to have an obvious beat and they are not going to let complex lyrics get in the way.
I completely agree with you Justin, I just find that great artists like you describe are getting harder and harder to find. But heck, at least they're still out there.
