I must say, I'm kind of shocked that there isn't a thread dedicated to this yet. Maybe it's not as popular as I thought it was, & I generally don't visit the Music & Books board all that much. But this fits perfectly in both categories, & I think there needs to be a thread on it. Anyway, I had first discovered this musical movement around a year & a half ago when I stumbled across a MySpace page for a band called Draco & the Malfoys, which led me to the page for Harry & the Potters. There are hundreds of similar artists making music all completely inspired by the Harry Potter series & calling it Wizard Rock, or Wrock. Lately, a lot of the more popular bands have even been getting their songs sold on iTunes. The community for this (bands & fans alike) is huge, & several Wrock concerts have been organized to promote reading across the country & even the world. To learn more, visit the Wizrocklopedia: www.wizrocklopedia.com/Also, MTV did a news spot on the phenomenon, which is weird, but pretty cool. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb9adl1Lrd8I thought a lot of the MRFHers would be pretty into this & so felt the need to start this thread. Some of my favorite bands include Harry & the Potters, Draco & the Malfoys, the Moaning Myrtles, the Remus Lupins, & the Whomping Willows. I also rather enjoy the Quaffle Kids & Dobby & the House Elves. Fight Evil. Read Books.

Actually, I just stumbled on to Wizard Rock about two months ago. I haven't heard many bands, or am able to talk with much depth, but I like The Moaning Myrtles, The Parselmouths, and Ministry of Magic.

My favorite is Draco and the Malfoys. "My Dad is Rich, and Your Dad is Dead," is oft quoted amongst my group of friends. I was able to see Harry and the Potters probably...a year ago. The show was probably one of the funnest ones I've ever been to. There were bubbles and balloons and kids dancing on stage. Awesome.
I think this is one of my favorite new genres. It definitely appeals to the HP Nerd in me, and it's just plain fun. Plus some of the bands are actually pretty good.

I don't mean to play the hater right out of the gate, especially not having heard the music, but...
This is possibly the dumbest trend I've ever heard of.

For me, it's just kinda fun. I don't, ya know, see me ever spending money on it.

This is possibly the dumbest trend I've ever heard of. Yeah, I can see that. It's pretty dumb when people have fun making and listening to music about subjects they they enjoy. (OH SNAP!)

As one of my sorority sisters said, "you want to hate them because they're the antagonists. But dammit, their music is so good!" Sure, it's dorky & sounds stupid, but a lot of great music pulls inspiration from weird places. Led Zeppelin has based at least 4 songs of off LotR, & they're pretty much the greatest & one of the most popular bands ever. Plus, I'm all about promoting literacy, especially with kids, & that's the main goal of Wizard Rock. I'm hopefully going to see Harry & the Potters at the New York Public Library in May FOR FREE!!!!!!! (This just in - I am a nerd.)

Yeah, I can see that. It's pretty dumb when people have fun making and listening to music about subjects they they enjoy. (OH SNAP!) Hahaha... well played. Look, if they enjoy doing it and someone enjoys listening to it, then it's got a right to exist. But you've gotta admit, it reeeeeally sounds like jumping on the bandwagon. I see a whole lot of people trying to hide CD's at dinner parties in the future.

And I will admit there does seem to be a surplus of bands (although I'm constantly amused by their names, I won't lie). But it's at least fun for now and the music is pretty good. I'm hoping it keeps going strong and doesn't stop existing the minute people realize they need to "get a life." (whatever THAT means)

Duh, Justin, that's not how it works in the wizarding world.
