as you all know, i am not only egomaniacal and balding, but also deeply insecure and timid. to those ends, i've decided i must have an item that will say to those i pass on the street "hey, i have no real personality of my own and must buy 'hip' and 'cool' possessions to express the yawning mawr at the depths of my void!" or something to that effect.
long story short: i've decided i either want - a pair of black converse - one of those new ipods with the click wheel
which is better? what will i get more mileage and enjoyment out of? didn't billy joel say "don't waste your money on a new set of speakers (ipod) you get more mileage from a cheap pair of (converse) sneakers"? does anyone have any "yea's" or "nay's" to share on these items? just wondering.
kyle p.s. - you might ask, in vintage eric mccormack in "free enterprise" (the comic store scene) fashion: "kyle, just buy them BOTH." but i'm trying to take a stand here against my selfish interests, so i'm only going to allow myself to buy one of them. so getting both is out of the question. unless YOU want to buy me one of them, freeing me to buy the other. that would be cool.
p.p.s - also, if you lean towards the converse, can you please tell what's better for guys to wear: the high-tops or the low-tops? i have no idea, though i'm buying the latest issue of nylon in hopes of finding out!

Well, I'll just say (with shame) that I bought the new 4th gen iPod and... well... it's awesome. Sigh. Works perfectly, was easy to upload all my music, and it's so freaking tiny. Highly recommended.

"...next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways it's still rock and roll to me."
I own red high-tops. I don't know what's better for guys to wear, but I like to wear them with skirts. However, I'd gladly rip your eyes out with rusty forks on a public street to get your iPod. You know, in case you were hiding it inside your skull or something.

Well, I suppose it depends on who you're trying to attract to you: geeky, bespectacled technonerds like my freshman year roommate, or the kind of fine young ladies who'd be impressed by new sneakers... you know, fresh out of their 7th period pre-algebra classes.
(Leather jacket! Leather jacket!)
Actually, they're both sorta geek chic, so I guess it depends on whether you're looking for longevity with your new purchase. The iPod'll be outdated in, what, a year? Whereas the sneakers could last you for probably two, easy. Here's an idea- I've got a birthday coming up in 2 weeks. If I ask for the sneaks, then send 'em to you, can I finally have the combination to the office liquor cabinet?

Converses are classic. Really. Okay, so when I first got mine a year and a half ago they were more of the rebel/punk thing to wear. I have three pairs. Blue high-tops, monochromatic black high-tops, and purple satin low-tops with flowers. Am eyeing a pair of the pink Converse re-issues. Hot Topic rules.
</end praise of all things Converse>
For guys I think high-tops work best. And if you fold them down or get any of the two-tones ones, I'll be ripping your eyes out with rusty forks. Bleargh!
That said, the iPod isn't bad either. I don't even have an mp3 player yet.

I say you should buy the Ipod, load it full of Billy Joel and then sing along in public places. You'd be surprised how bright you can make someone's day just by singing "Uptown Girl" while standing next to them. Just a word of warning: don't try singing Uptown Girl while standing next to someone who looks as if they could compete in a hand-to-hand fighting competition. It usually doesn't end well.
Converse may be classic, but they're too darn narrow for my feet. So I now hold a grudge. Wearing those might just have pushed my "cool-o-meter' over to the funky side of the world.

I still hate Macs, but I am not so blind as to not appreciate the pluses of the iPod. I've been evaluating it for a week now, and I'm very impressed. 20 gigs storage, very easy shuffle/volume control/manipulation, very tiny, and iTunes makes uploading and ripping CDs a snap. A snap, I tells ya!
So if you're on the fence about one, I'd say go for it. I did invest in a Firewire adapter for my computer (much faster uploads than USB connections, which is the other option). I even bring it with me in the car, hook it up to a radio transmitter, and listen to it over my car radio that way. Fun.

How about buying a Creative MP3 player instead. They're a lot cheaper, and, in my opinion, look a bit cooler. And you still get as much space (but I don't understand why an MP3 player needs 20 GB. On both of my computers I probably only have 6 or 7 GB of music, a lot of it not being mine, and 20 GB would be what, 10000 songs or so?)

Creative doesn't make good mp3 players, as I learned the hard way. VERY hard to upload music (I had to use a 3rd party program), much bulkier, and not that sharp looking (in my opinion).

as you may or may not know, i ended up buying some converse and an ipod mini.
i'm still happy with both. but now i'm thinking of getting one of those new ipod photo models and giving the mini to one of my parents. have you heard anything about the new ipods? and what's better: 20 and slim, (discontinued) 30 and still somewhat slim, or the 40 or 60 which aren't slim?
also: if you go to the customer feedback at amazon about the 20 gig model, somebody talks about how they got one of the black foam coverings for the included earplug headphones stuck in one of their ears. for like a month, and they had to get a doctor to remove it.
that is the funniest thing i have read in about a week. i can't even believe that's true. that's madness! how would you not know, either immediately or within a couple days? i don't get it.

Mad props on choosing both!
I just recently got my first pair of Cons - they're the black hightop variety. Now I have to go find a pink pair for my 2-year-old daughter so we can match.

get the ipod and a comfortable pair of shoes, and a cheap LOOKING pair of earphones for the ipod, or a few body guards. :/ seriously, its all over cnn and mutant reviewers. people can and will rip your eyeballs out to steal your ipod.

Different strokes. I've got a 20 GB with 3251 songs on it. I've got 3.9 GB free. And that's not even all of my CDs, let alone my boyfriend's. Kyle, if you get a case, you should get the iSee case from Contour Design. It's clear plastic, so your iPod shows through. It's very protective. I should know--I'm a big klutz and have dropped my iPod many, many times. The case got a bit scuffed, but my iPod is A-OK. It's got a built-in belt clip, which is sideways (so your iPod doesn't dig into your belly when you sit down). It's a bit of a pain to take the iPod in and out, but I just leave it in. The top is completely open so you can use accessories, and there's a door on the bottom to access the port. Bad news--you can't use it on a charging cradle, but I don't have one, anyway. Sorry about the plug there. I swear, I have no affiliation with the company. I just love my case!

GOO!
now, three months after i bought the new 20 gig ipod photo model, they release the slimmer 30 and 60 gig versions that now play video.
argh! i can't decide if i'm upset because the new models are slimmer and can play video, or if i don't really care because i love my ipod and wouldn't watch video of any kind too often on a 2.5" screen. or maybe i'm just distracted by my nintendo ds concerns (see: new thread in 'video games' section).
hard to say. anyone else super-tempted by the new slimmer ipod video, or is it just dumb?
