Good job, Kyle. I was surprised that you didn't mention how off the pacing was for a horror movie, though. The movie was almost two hours long, and no one died for...well, without giving minor spoilers, no one dies for a looooong time.
Also, I do think that the soundtrack had quite a few jarring moments of "that's just wrong". To wit: Interpol and Har Mar Superstar. The second one was a little more appropriate, but I can't believe either agreed to be featured in this movie.
And I had more than a few problems with the logistics of the ending sequence. Again, I don't want to get into spoilers, but I have serious doubts about the properties of a wax house and the relative ease with which the main characters seem to navigate it under...extenuating circumstances.

you're absolutely right: that was a good review! *modified after posting to point out that kyle's vanity and ego are designed here to be humorous. no more hate mail!* i enjoyed the off-pacing, and that really reminded me of "wrong turn," which is why i mentioned it so much. "hosue of wax" seemed like another movie where the director and stuff was clearly influenced by '70s horror (where building up a creepy atmosphere and implying horrible, horrible stuff was more important than horrific death scenes [arguably]) but also had to blend in all the trappings of "modern horror." to paraphrase david bowie: no confession, no religion, i don't believe in modern horror. well, i guess i do. that's a lie. but hey! david bowie! the ending sequence was a little squishy in terms of logic, but the absolute ludicroucy of the overall premise managed to trump my desire for implementing the laws of thermodynamics. i still want to know where they got all that wax. it is sort of a non-traditional modern horror film, though. you're quite right about that. but anything different is good. i'm trying to think of another cool horror film that takes a while to develop, but i can't. doh. it seems like there are a couple on the tip of my tongue, but they just won't come. argh! but, yeah. "wrong turn." highly recommended, and if you waffling on "house of wax" try renting "wrong turn" first to see if you'd dig the style. i guess.

Nice one, Kyle! Now, the information I need to know: on a hotness scale of 1 to 10 -- with 1 being "absolutely hideous" and 10 being "season 2 of 24, lost in the woods on a cold night in a skintight tanktop, being chased by a cougar" -- where's my beloved Elisha fall in this movie? Inquiring minds and all that.

that's a good question.
i'm going to go with a 7.
why? well, because i knew she was hot going in, yeah, but i can't say that during the film (after the initial "it's elisha OMG PWM LOL!!!!!) i was taken out of the movie by going "man, this **** is crazy, and elisha sure is ****ing *******." compared to stuff like "wrong turn" or "boogeyman," where i was easily able to go "eh, this movie is great/eh, but let me take a second to salute eliza dushku/emily danschel."
so she's hot enough to make you know it's her (represent!) but she's tousled and tough-looking enough that your attention is pretty solidly in the story. it just may be the greatest acting performance of the year thus far.

Looks like (in contrast to Sin City's review) we're back to censoring the word "bastard" again, though. Despite it's place in the English language as a perfectly meaningful word.

Kyle censored it. It's the mark of a gentleman with refined taste. Compared to that naughty, naughty Drew.

Sorry, this is getting a little OT, I prolly shoulda just started a new thread in the movies forum. BUT, as long as we're on the subject...
***spoilers***
I like how in the movie Elisha suffers a horriffic lip trauama that somehow only results in her lips being more red, pouty, and sexy immediately after that plot device has lost its use.
Also, I swear that in a melting house of wax anyone with lungs would asphyxiate in no time at all.
***end spoilers***

Kyle censored it. It's the mark of a gentleman with refined taste. Screw you, man- a true artist never lets himself be censored by the fascists! Attica! Attica! Compared to that naughty, naughty Drew. Hey, I can't help it if blonds have more fun. Your lampshade says to hate the game, not the playa. -D
