In defense of Halloween III: Season of the Witch, it wasn't SUPPOSED to have anything to do with Michael Myers. This was a case of the studio not listening to the artist. John Carpenter's original vision for the series was for each Halloween movie to be a scary story unrelated to all the others, that would end on a cliffhanger. The movies were supposed to premiere on Halloween nights at midnight, to freak all the audience members out as they were leaving.
However, the original film and Michael Myers became so popular, and people were so upset at the ending, that the studio demanded that John Carpenter make a sequel explaining what happened. Carpenter being a new filmmaker at the time thought "hey, I get to make another movie!" (Halloween was made independently and bought by MCA/Universal sometime later) so he agreed and made Halloween II. After this movie was successful, Carpenter decided to go back to his original plan, and make another totally unrelated movie that had a cliffhanger ending.
Thus we have Halloween III: Season of the Witch.
However, crowds expecting a Michael Myers film were greatly disappointed, and so the movie was a giant flop at the box office. This ended Carpenter's plan, as the studio would not green light any more films of this type. Carpenter, frustrated, would have nothing else to do with the rest of the film series.
This is why the third Halloween is what it is, not a cobbled together movie to make money, but yet another example of the masses not understanting the filmmaker's intent, and thus not appreciating the work.
