absolutely fantastic. you can argue the third act sags as it hits the typical (super)hero movie tropes, and wonder how much relevatory the film and robert downey jr.'s performance would have been if the best bits weren't played ad nauseum in all the trailers.
but at 3:40 in the morning, all i can is AWESOME!
brief aside: if you're going to a midnight imax showing (not that 'iron man' is in imax; they just showed it on the big screen 'cause that's how we do) why would anyone, let alone about 15% of the theater, spend a whole lot of time texting during the movie? i guarantee your life is NOT that interesting, nor do you have anything you need to say NOW during the film versus two hours later AFTER the film.
no texting, kids. do it for iron man if not for me!

Dude, I totally agree! I haven't had this much fun at a non-Harry Potter flick in a very long time. I'm going again tonight!

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, it looks like a pretty awesome movie and the reviews have been great. On the other, Marvel has made Tony Stark into such a fascist lately (like holding fellow superheroes in prison indefinitely without due process and, uh, engineering terrorist attacks on U.S. soil) that I kind of hate the character now. I'm sure I'll see it, I just need to go in remembering this is Iron Man from back when he was a hero.
But man, if they make a Cap movie I'll see it twice, even if it sucks.

Glad you liked it, Kyle. I'm looking forward to it, myself, so I was wondering what other folk thought. I like the type-casting to Robery Downey Jr as an alcoholic millionaire...

I'm so excited about this one. Thus far I've heard some very good thing. And R-Down (that's what I call him now, I guess. He'd be thrilled) is amazing, and looks amazing in this.
Also, I didn't know that this was the first film that Marvel produced by itself, with Paramount distributing. I was actually wondering not too long ago why they weren't doing this for their properties, as they are a strong company and it seemed like a pretty obvious move (the thought popped up when I was thinking about cross-superhero movies, and being annoyed that it would probably never happen since so many different studios own the rights to produce so many different properties). Hopefully this is the start of great things for Marvel Studios productions.

I caught this last night (hooray for advance screenings!), and it was pretty good. Cloverfield is still my favourite movie of 2008, but Iron Man can sit pretty in the pantheon of good superhero movies. The Hulk, Daredevil, and Spider-man 3, meanwhile, remain at the kiddie table.

Hear, hear! you can argue the third act sags as it hits the typical (super)hero movie tropes, and wonder how much relevatory the film and robert downey jr.'s performance would have been if the best bits weren't played ad nauseum in all the trailers. Yeah, all the superheroic tropes and really, really, REALLY obvious foreshadowing are in there, but it doesn't bother me in the least because it was all just so damn well done. My only complaint--and I mean that, the ONLY one--was grousing about how short the movie was. Then I looked at a clock and saw it was actually over two hours long. I want more!

The Hulk, Daredevil, and Spider-man 3, meanwhile, remain at the kiddie table. Hulk wasn't a movie. It was a documentary. A Documentary on how to tank your directorial career and be exiled from the US permanently.

I loved Iron Man. I do agree it does sag in the third act but, it's all worth it for the scene after the credits.

Caught it yesterday afternoon (because everyone in Southern Indiana hides either at home or at the movies on Kentucky Derby day), and speaking as someone who knew absolutely nothing about the Iron Man character, I completely enjoyed myself. Downey was perfect, Paltrow didn't annoy me half as bad as she usually does, and the first time he slaps on the (silver) suit, the camera whirling and the music pumping...I got goosebumps.
My first words after the end titles were: "Sequel now, please?"
(And seeing as how it made $100.7 million domestically the first weekend--and over $200mil worldwide--I can't see how there won't be one.)

...didn't his next movie win an Oscar? Yes. Yes, it did. Best Director, come to think of it. I keep hearing rave reviews of this one, but the writer was quoted as saying that it's a show in how Microsoft is misunderstood and just a good guy trying to make a buck against the big bad Linux. As a Linux user, I say "Booooo, hissssssss." Not to say I won't see it. It's just kept me from getting pumped up. /computer elitism

Wow. Amazing. Robert Downey Jr. was perfect (speaking as someone who's never read the comics, his acting was wonderful. Of course does it really count as acting? I mean, ya know). It just had the feeling that the people working on the movie "got it," (I've yet to come up with a better term) and that is so important on comics turned movies.
LadyStarblade, they are already talking trilogy.
Side note: Latest previews for Dark Knight, Incredible Hulk, and Indiana Jones -without one Fanta commercial. Hate that. Hate!- just made me happy. Look for them on the News page Tuesday!

And just FYI - Tony Stark will cameo in the Hulk movie this summer (they're possibly looking at an Iron Man vs. Hulk movie in the future)

...didn't his next movie win an Oscar? Weather Balloon. I'm sure you can't tell because I hide it with such tact, but I'm one to hold grudges. For long periods of time. Ang Lee still needs a punch in the face for Hulk and I won't rest soundly until someone does it.
