Funny Games. On the face of it just another torture porn, but since you never actually see any of the violence it's really more a way of looking at the way violence is treated in Western (especially, yes, American) culture. That sounds dull, but it was amazing, while leaving my friend and I incredibly . . . shellshocked? If it doesn't get under your skin, I'd be surprised. The way the violence is portrayed makes it way more disturbing than any slasher film.

Did you watch the original or the remake, sarah? I got to see an advanced screening of the remake a few months ago; it blew me away (is that a pun?...k-kinda?), and apparently, the original's even better.
If only zip.ca would get around to sending me Das Original Funny Games...grrr...

The remake. I'm usually a purist about this sort of thing, but I'm not sure that even if I wanted to put myself through watching it again that I'd bother watching the original, since it's supposed to be so faithful and it's by the same director and everything.
And for a change of pace, Mamma Mia - really went to see it because we knew Dark Knight would be insane and wanted to wait for a while. I loved the cast and was hoping they'd managed to cut some of the cheesiness of the stage production. No such luck. (Why must all friends communicate that they are such by YELLING AT EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME?!) Still, fun music and enjoyable in an escapist sort of way, just so long as you know what you're getting. My hipster brother tolerated it. My dad loved it, oddly enough, and is insisting on buying the DVD. He owns less than half a dozen DVDs (I get it from my mom, clearly). He's talking about seeing it in the theatre again. Sometimes I don't understand my family.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor: This was just plain boring. I enjoyed the first one a lot more than I thought I would, but I thought the second was just passable. As for this one, there was barely anything keeping my attention. First and foremost, I didn't like Mario Bello as Evey. She played it way too over-the-top (for the character's personality, that is). I also didn't like Luke Ford as their son, Alex. My other gripes: Evey's brother Jonathan has just become flat-out annoying (like Stifler became by American Wedding), the direction was lifeless, and some of the action scenes just seemed so bland. It's not all bad, as I did enjoy a few of the action sequences (mainly the Yeti scene, which I was surprised I liked), and Brendan Fraser and Jet Li do their best. Final Rating: D
Eragon: The dragon and special effects were good, but the story was lacking and Ed Speelers was horrible as Eragon. His performance was laughable and I wanted to punch him throughout the film. Final Rating: C-
The Brave One: I've seen this so many times before (especially with Foster), but this was better than the norm. Good performances all around and it was compelling throughout. Not great, but worth a watch if you're into these types of movies. Final Rating: B-
The Onion Movie: I've heard about The Onion before, so I decided to see what all the hoopla (yes, I just said hoopla) was about. And I have to say, this was, for most of the film, extremely funny. Most of the sketches had me laughing out loud (especially C**kpuncher) while a few fall short of laughter. This made me an Onion fan. Final Rating: B+
Southland Tales: This was just weird. And not in a good way. At first, I was kind of curious where it was going, but that soon faded away with all the crap twists and confusing subplots. The acting, for the most part, was surprisingly bad. A lot of overacting in this film (which I blame on the director, for most likely telling them to go over the top). The plot was bad (I didn't like how doomsday already happened in 2006, when this movie was released in 2006). My main complaint is the film's length, which clocks in at a hefty 2 hours and 40 minutes. There was no reason for this length, since the film could've ended at the 2-hour mark. The film just drags on forever. Final Rating: D

I FINALLY saw Army of Darkness tonight.
Truth be told, I didn't know that they made movies that awesome. I feel enlightened and fulfilled now.

I feel enlightened and fulfilled now. *Wise Old Man voice* This is indeed a great step forward in your cult-fu training. As for me, just saw Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. It's not perfect but it's quirky and fun, and I ended up really liking it. My latest " discovery" is Lee Pace, and a look at my queue tells me The Fall is fourth on the list.

The Happening-forced into this one by a friend who will watch anything as long as it appears to be horror. I'm not an M. Night fan as it is, but this just...um...sucked.
Paperhouse-Not as good as I was hoping, and the little girl was awful. Neat idea though, and some genuinely creepy moments.
The Woman in Black-I was so excited when this one finally arrived at my house...six months ago. It took me that long to build up my courage to watch it. Was not as scary as its been built up to be, but it was still a good ghost story.

Finally got around to seeing Pan's Labyrinth. I wasn't avoiding it or anything, it just took me a while to see.
The face/head smashing was a bit much, but overall I liked the movie. Reminded me A LOT of -also one of del Toro's- The Devil's Backbone, only a little more upbeat.

Near Dark
Wow, really good vampire movie. Even with the tenuous grasp of depicting time (more than once I was thinking 'Buh? It's sunrise already?').
Bill Paxton absolutely steals the movie, with Lance Henriksen giving him a run for his money. Is it weird to find such a violent (the spurs and bartender? Ick) '80s movie actually refreshing?
