Okay... the guesses have been received for both participants. The first to send his in was Kaleb, who correctly identified 1 of the 11 character/song combinations. Next came astral, who identified...
. . . . . . . . . . .
(The suspense is killing me, how 'bout you?)
. . . . .
2 of the 11! Thus, she becomes the second runner-up, after Oogie. Kaleb, thank you very much for your participation... you played an excellent game, just were slightly touched out at the end. As a swimmer, I know what that's like.
I will be contacting our 3 winners in the next couple of days to arrange their prizes (and yes, BCWC, manga does count as comics). Meanwhile, here's the answers to the 11 remainders:
Surrender Your Heart by Missing Persons - Dazzler
Perhaps the most reluctant X-Man ever, Alison Blaire desired stardom as a singer far more than superheroics. But after being outed as a mutant, she had to disguise herself as a backup singer with Lila Cheney's band, and an attack by Malice of the Marauders convinced her that the X-Men were the safest place to be, even if it meant sacrificing her dreams of stardom.
Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel - Cable
Before any of his family relations or mutant powers were revealed, Cable was just a grizzled old veteran with a ton of guns, bent on remaking the world through armed warfare. Add "War" to the beginning of the title of this song and you've got it.
Where Were You by Jeff Beck - Thunderbird
If you could speak with his ghost, would John Proudstar express bitter anguish about why his teammates couldn't save him? Or would he just kick himself for trying to destroy a plane with his bare hands instead of letting someone who could fly, oh, hit it with a bolt of lightning or shred it with a sonic scream?
Lock and Key by Rush - Mirage
With the power to telepathically pull out a person's greatest fear or desire and project it as an incredibly realistic 3-D hologram, Moonstar had a very difficult time early on keeping her own emotions in check to prevent doing so and alienating their teammates. In particular, she probably wishes she hadn't accidentally projected Karma's greatest fear.
Hard Act To Follow by Split Enz - Colossus
This is probably the one that's hardest for me to peg what my friend was connecting it with. I can't remember when Colossus died to release the cure for the Legacy Virus, but if it was before this playlist was compiled, maybe that was it. Otherwise... I dunno, he's an incredibly sensitive artist who can also beat the crap out of anyone. That's a pretty hard act to follow.
Hearts by Yes - Jean Grey/Phoenix
Jean was indisputably the heart and soul of the original X-Men, it was the inherent goodness in her heart that helped rein in Dark Phoenix originally, and in the end, her ultimate humanity that helped her make the decision to end her own life to prevent Dark Phoenix from ever returning. (In theory.)
Little by Little by Robert Plant - Longshot
The happy-go-lucky, messianic Longshot is trapped in a perpetual cycle of rebelling against his master, leading a rebellion, losing, and getting his mindwiped. In particular, his time with the X-Men was marked by trying to regain pieces of his personality, little by little, and his inability to do so was why he ultimately left.
Waiting For A Million Years by Missing Persons - Phoenix II
The daughter of Jean Grey and Cyclops (maybe) from an alternate timeline, Rachel Summers jumped back in time and was distressed to learn she'd fled to a timeline where her mother was dead and her father married to someone else. Ray's spent time waiting for her mother's return, waiting for Jean and Cyclops to get back together, and waiting for herself to be born... which never did happen. And after becoming lost in the timestream in order to save Captain Britain, she was imprisoned at the end of time until finally being rescued by her kinda brother, Cable.
Not One Of Us by Peter Gabriel - Havok
The younger brother of Cyclops, Alex Summers has perpetually lived in his brother's shadow and often struggled with feelings of not belonging on the team. He and Polaris have rarely felt like they fit in with Xavier's brood, often tried living a normal life, and have repeatedly been dragged kicking and screaming back into mutant politics.
Behind the Lines by Genesis - Banshee
Before he was an X-Man, Sean Cassidy worked as an undercover agent for Interpol. On one particular mission, he left before learning his wife was pregnant and was still gone when she gave birth, then died, leaving Theresa Cassidy to be raised by her villainous uncle while Sean remained ignorant of his daughter's existence. Stupid undercover work.
On The Loose by Saga - Sunspot
The brash, arrogant, slightly hedonistic Roberto Dacosta grew up privileged before learning he had the power to convert the sun's energy into super-strength. However, as much as his natural inclination is to cut loose in all situations, he lives in constant fear of ending up like his father, a member of the Hellfire Club.

Curses! Foiled again!
That was great fun, though.
Not one to let Phil be the only spinoff-contest-maker, allow me to pose the following question: Would anyone be interested at all in a Transformers-themed one of these things?
I've got the beginnings of such a thing laid out already; the only thing that makes me hesitate is that I'm unsure of the affinity of the forumite population for the franchise in question and the preponderance of oddly-appropriate squawky glam metal that goes with it.

I'm wondering how a Simpsons-themed song-list-contest would play out...? Jumping on the bandwagon is fun!
