I don't understand why so many people here have labeled this a "summer popcorn flick". This is not a summer popcorn flick. Iron Man was a summer popcorn movie. Indiana Jones was a summer popcorn movie. This was a crime epic on par with the Departed or Heat. Best movie of the year and one of my favorites, ever.

<goes... checks>
One person used that phrase. And it was still a pretty positive take on the movie.

So between this movie and IT I think I will be scared of clowns for the rest of my life. I used to remember liking clowns, and wondering why people were scared of them. Then I saw IT in high school, the first movie I ever had nightmares of. I avoided those drainage things on the corners of streets for years. I thought I had overcome by immature fear of the movie, until about a month ago, I saw a harmless clip of the movie on tv. It wasn't even a scene where anything scary happened, but instantly all the fear and memories flooded back. Now, Pennywise looked scary, and so did the Joker (who was AWESOME, but more on that later), but his clown accomplices in the first scene have really scarred me of clowns for life, I think. Not that it makes the movie any less awesome, and bank-robbing clowns with shotguns are amazing, but still.
I think Ledger deserves a nom for an Oscar. I won't say he deserves it, partially because I probably won't see any other Oscar-nominated movies this summer, and I don't consider my self enough of a movie connoisseur to say that.
This pushed my limit for violence and action (I'm a wuss, I admit, Mamma Mia! is more up my alley) but I was alternately on the edge of my seat, and covering my eyes. A ton of movie packed into nearly two and a half hours, but the first movie in a long time I think I will see again in the theaters.
EDIT: astralprojections, agree with you on the 'bat voice'. I would have giggled at it, but everybody else in the theater seemed to be taking it seriously, so I wasn't sure what my reaction was supposed to be there.
A) I don't like the character of Rachel, nor do I like Maggie. I see them separately, and dislike them both.
B) I do however, like Michael Caine, Alfred, Gary Oldman, and the character of Harvey Dent. I thought he got a lot of well-deserved storyline.
C) Maybe I'm just stupid, but I thought the movie did make me think. Little things like the Joker switching the addresses of Harvey and Rachel's locations I didn't catch at first. I liked how the Joker liked creating havoc for no particular reason 'cept to watch the world burn. It seems like in movies every thing has to have purpose and a nice and tidy end. I how the Joker had no real background, driving reason, or purpose. He alternated between funny-scary, and frightening-scary.

Aw Pooly, were you getting all riled up again? You know our insurance deductible went through the roof last time you got all riled up.

I wasn't upset, and no apology required. I just thought I'd point out that most of the folks here seemed to have taken the movie pretty seriously, and those who didn't still seemed satisfied with it.

I sat down and watched Batman (1989) with my niece today. Jack nicholson Did a great job as the Joker... But Heath ledger just killed it. His portrayal will be one for the edges. On that note....
dude... "Batman" is almost 20 years old. 20 YEARS. Where soes the time GO???
