Yep, that's the one, but I was playing with setting the framerate down to 30, not with the resolution. I will give that a shot.

I wouldn't mind a classically styled but new Final Fantasy game. Bring back the 2D and menus! I'm with you, I'd like to see another one with the cute, SD sprites and 2D gameplay. I don't mind if they throw in lots of impressive FMV sequences, but I'd like the gameplay itself to be decidedly retro. And, actually, I'd like to see FF VII done in the old style, to see if it really compares with FF VI when both are the same graphically. Another Bionic Commando sounds cool... I'd also like to see another Contra game done with the original sprites, but new levels. (Only if the Konami code still works, though!) And a sequel to the X-Men arcade game, but with new levels and bad guys (the Marauders!) would be money. -D We're quite the inverse. To me Contra is a holy ark of non-cheating, a sort of refuge in a safe haven for games I can never bring myself to use a code for except in total fun. The few more refuges would be other NES classics and their sequels, such as Megaman, Mario, Zelda, and any multiplayer online game. All other games are totally fair game. In fact, I get mad at a game if it doesn't have decent cheats. I recently found an old DOS version of Sim City 2000 and was disappointed there's no instant money cheat, just a bond cheat that gives you a set amount each year. Kinda lame. Also, I have yet to beat the first mission in GTA: San Andreas because I don't care about the plot and I just want to have fun so I spawn a Harrier and wreck havoc in the city, Starscream style, or spawn a stock car with nitro and hit every ramp I can. Really, they wasted their time with the plot and characters as far as I'm concerned. Sandbox ALL THE WAY! As for Bionic Commando: It's a 2D game that lags? Totally inexcusable.

It may actually be able to deal with a refresh rate somewhere between 60 and 30, it's just that I, like you, tried 30 first thing, and the game was like, "You crazy, foo'!" Similar effect when I tried lowering the res to 512x384; just to see if I could, you know, makes things even uglier.

As for Bionic Commando: It's a 2D game that lags? Totally inexcusable. Well... yes and no. It plays like a 2D game. But it's fully 3D rendered, and in incredible detail, to boot. It's truly amazing. However, this obviously comes at the price that my computer, which can run Crysis reasonably well, can't seem to hack it. I'm honestly mystified. Huckle, I signed on to the BCR forum too, let's trade recipes!

The fact that your computer can run Crysis, a game with not only amazing graphics but an amazing physics and game engine, but not run a port of an NES game with NES physics but better graphics, it totally bad programming. The fact you two have had to go on a forum and trade endless amounts of recipes and fixes for the game JUST to play it... who is this company and where can I sign up to blacklist them forever?

who is this company and where can I sign up to blacklist them forever? Judging by all of the vitriol flying around the BCR forums, you probably don't need to. But, for future boycotting reference: Grin is the name of the developer. Normally I try to keep my delusions of persecution in check, but this is starting to look like a classic case of a developer focusing on the consoles, and then just half-assing a port to PC; hoping it works, but not actually caring.

If they could get Commander Keen to work on PC (Keen was born as a Super Mario Brothers 3 clone to prove IBM could do it), they can get this to work. It's just laziness.
At least people ACKNOWLEDGE it doesn't work. For years I seethed in rage at people saying Ghost Recon 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront (Xbox) had good multiplayer. They must have had a better version than my code cause those games were lag city and finding a game to join was almost impossible. Not to mention the fact no name popped up when your team mates talked to you.

Actually, the weird thing is, it seems the OPPOSITE of laziness. They've put too much work into it, with no way of shutting it off. The develop has, demonstrably and verifiably, worked really, really hard to make this game awesome. It's a $15 remake of a beloved game from my youth, filled with cool upgrades. It looks as pretty as anything I've ever seen on my computer. It's got a wicked, self-deprecating sense of humour. I want to love it.
But they seriously need some graphic settings. You can change the resolution and the framerate (down to 60 fps), but that's IT. No option to turn off shadows. No lower res models. No off switch for particle effects, bloom lighting, or background animation. It's all TERRIFIC, but I'd gladly switch it off to run it faster. If I can dial down the character models in Half Life 2 to play at a smooth framerate and still be scared pantsless when the first zombie jumped out, I could find a way to enjoy Bionic Commando.

They took Chrono Trigger, a classic, and made a sequel/remake/sorta dealie with Chrono Cross - in full 3D and on the pitifully underpowered Playstation. It's all about coding. Look at Metroid Prime for a good example of coding. Not a single lag, slowdown or even loading screen. Again, full 3D. A 2D game with 2D sprites in this day and age shouldn't do that. It's a remake of an NES game, there's gotta be two physics parameters:
Bullets go really slow. Main character can jump and swing, gravity pulls him down... sometimes.
Other than that there's, what, hit detection, 'AI', sound, graphics. I haven't seen the game but I don't understand how they could get the 3D bionic commando to run smooth when they can't get the 2D to run smooth. Also, the 3D has more levels and more controls. It just baffles me.

A 2D game with 2D sprites in this day and age shouldn't do that. It's a remake of an NES game I'm going to try and relate this one last time, and then I promise I'll stop. It's not a 2D game. It's fully rendered 3D, including the main character, the enemies (who ragdoll when they die), the environments, the particle effects, and the multilayered background. The camera just happens to be on rails, so it LOOKS like a 2D game. If you're familiar with Super Smash Bros, it's a similar effect. In SSB, the game looks like a 2D side scrolling fighter. But when you paused the game, you could zoom and rotate the camera all over the place. It's the same effect in Bionic Commando, you just don't have the option to zoom in and rotate. So I understand that the game has high system demands. I get that. It's perfectly acceptable to me in this day and age. But on paper, I meet those demands. Unlike most modern games, which allow you to dial down details, shadows, effects, etc, you have no options except to pull back the framerate (to an unnecessarily high 60 fps) and the resolution, neither of which truly impacts performance. What we need is some off switches for all these great graphic touches. Honestly, Rett, if you could see it, you'd understand. Anyway, now I'm playing Beyond Good And Evil.

Ooh, good choice. Did you see they're finally making a sequel?

I still don't see how a game with tiny little guys (as fully rendered as tiny little guys can get) shooting tiny little bullets can push your system more than Crysis could.

Ooh, good choice. Did you see they're finally making a sequel? I take it that's in reference to BG&E? No, I didn't know that. I'll go check it out!

Hey, Pool-aid!
Word out on the street is that a fix is in development for BCR's slowdown problem.

I saw that, but I'm just going to wait. Wait, and grumble. ETA: Wow, the patch is out (I saw you already downloaded it, Huckle), and I'm in awe. It's too bad the game was obviously broken when they shipped it, but they at least jumped to the pump and got it fixed pretty darn quick. The game is now like buttah, even at highest resolution. I'm absolutely blown away. Of course, now that the slowmo is gone, it's waaaay harder.
