Do I detect the shock of an ER fan? I was sorry to hear this as well.
It's an opportunity to point out his earlier work to those who haven't already read it, like The Andromeda Strain (duh!) and A Case Of Need. We read Rising Sun in high school. In class. How cool is that?

Do I detect the shock of an ER fan? I was sorry to hear this as well. Not even a little bit. I've never even watched one episode of that show. I've voraciously read nearly everything the man's written. It made me kinda mad that they really sold the Jurassic Park/ER angle and sort of threw in his genius writing as a side note. I absolutely loved Rising Sun, as well as Airframe. And I thought State of Fear was terrific. I've pretty much loved everything he's done. His is the first death of the year that's brought tears to my eyes and made me sick at my stomach.

Not even a little bit. I've never even watched one episode of that show. Neither have I. It was just an honest guess, without judgement. I don't know too many of his books yet, so thanks for the recommendations.

Rising Sun was a terrific book. I'll probably brush up on a bunch of his books just to get to know his writing more. RIP

Hey dex no offense taken. I've never watched ER so I don't know if there's any offense to be taken from being accused of being a fan.
Check out those titles, absolutely. Also The Great Train robbery. Next was decent, but he's done better IMHO.

Hey dex no offense taken. I've never watched ER so I don't know if there's any offense to be taken from being accused of being a fan. Well, there is, 'Cause there's better stuff around (yay Scrubs!) and it smacks of Clooney-fandom. ;-) I know it; I'll re-read it some time, if I can find it. In some box, there must be a French edition I picked up at a flea market. I believe you. With all due respect to Crichton, after reading Timeline, I guess it's more enjoyable to explore his earlier work.

I'm not a fan of soap operas (or "stories", depending on one's level of geriatricness). That's what I've always thought ER was and therefore I never watched it. And Scrubs? What about House!? I loves me some House! Due to my poor observation skills at fist I couldn't figure out whether or not you're saying you enjoyed Timeline. I think you disliked it and regardless of whether or not I'm right I'll throw my two cents in. I had forgotten I even read that book because I hated it. Finished it, but hated it. Speaking of poor observation skills I just realized you wrote that your class read Rising Sun in high school. That is freaking awesome. I demand a time machine be built for the soul purpose of transporting my senior self to your class where I could spend my days reading Michael Crichton novels instead of the weird notices my English teacher put on her bulletin board (Not limited to the one that read "Do not mark, spit, tear, or otherwise marr the board paper. The paper is pretty. The aliens have spoken"). It would have been funny if I didn't suspect she was entirely serious.

I agree. House could beat everyone of those ER doctors to death with his cane (if not his caustic wit).
I didn't really care for Timeline either. When I read it I just felt it was mediocre, but I think seeing the movie has colored my judgement and made me like the book less than I would have otherwise.
One I haven't seen you guys mention is Sphere. I read it back in high school, but I remember thinking it was really good and creepy. Didn't care for the movie, though.

There was a movie for that? OH dear heaven. Stupid freaking Hollywood I hate you. That, my dear friend, would be because I haven't read Sphere. I KNOW I KNOW. I just haven't made it around to it yet. We could write an eternally long list of good/iconic books/movies I haven't partaken of yet. I heard the movie was horrible, so maybe that's why I have passed it up at the library for other Michael Cricton fare.

Oh, yes, there was a movie of Timeline. And oh, yes, it was bad. It truly is one of the worst films I have ever seen.
Seems like it was produced or direct by Richard Donner and it was pretty faithful to the book, but the production values were of a bargin basement quality and the acting was atrocious.
I hesitate to recommend Sphere. It was probably my favorite of his books, but I read it when I was just starting high school. It could be one of those things where I remember it being really good, but if I read it now I may not be as impressed.

Seems like it was [...] pretty faithful to the book FWIW I agree. I read the book and the movie script and will not see movie. But hey, I could watch Rising Sun any time.

[ ] Then you totally dissed me and I declare flame wars!!!!!! Iwil tTlY PWN JOO [x] Or...not. Whichever. And Scrubs? What about House!? I loves me some House! To all you House fans here: You are probably right. I haven't watched that show a lot yet and haven't made up my mind. Yep. Didn't hate it, though. Well, there is one, but it's mostly a one-way trip to France. All right, since we're already on the mother of all tangents here... Let me trump your (great) school story. Same Crichton-reading class, same semester. We had gotten a new teacher. Young, male, sleek sunglasses and tight leather pants -- just mentioning that for the female audience's entertainment. We also analyzed movies in this class. Once Upon A Time In The West. Are y'all quivering with envy yet? Well, here is the rest of the story. We didn't watch the whole movie. Just part of it. The first 10 minutes. But those, about 20 times. We would jot down the cuts, SFX, lighting, etc in class and act out the "You got a horse for me?"-scene during recess. Once, we watched the first half of the movie in class. I had to wait a couple of years to see on TV how it ended. We read Rising Sun side by side with Run, Jane, Run. For you blissfully unaware: that's Joy Fielding. *swallows bile* And the semester's test was about Mermaids. (Hate. Cher. Since.) Three open-ended questions; the last one: "Have you ever felt like Winona's character?" I was so angry, I just wrote: "No, I never feared I was pregnant." D. Oh, did I mention that with this new teacher, 90% of the girls improved by one grade and 90% of the guys dropped? Ah, those were the days. Should have skipped school more often.
