I went to The Unborn on opening night. It was decent, better than most next gen horror flicks, but was lacking in a few key elements to make it great. 7/10

The last movie I saw in a theatre was Australia, but I can't remember when that was before or after the New Year.
EDIT: It was before the New Year. But yesterday I went to see Defiance, so I can definitively call that my first movie of 2009.

i went with the late showing of 'my bloody valentine 3-d.' it felt like the right thing to do! although technically i went to 'the unborn,' since it was $2 extra for mbv3-d tickets (i guess to cover the cost of 3-d glasses?) so it was easier to buy an 'unborn' ticket, charm some glasses, and then sneak into the proper theater.
highly recommended, by the way. i brought in a big bag of powdered sugar donuts and a red bull, and watched the movie with absolute dregs of society. but horror movies are perhaps better in those conditions, and this was no exception. at least i didn't hear any cell phones: nice!
probably not worth an actual review, since upon reflection it pretty much falls apart with the slightest examination, but: i really enjoyed that they brought in a major aspect from the original film, which is that EVERYONE is a jerk in the movie. there are a couple characters more sympathetic than others, but when your hero is a total scumbag, you KNOW you're watching a fun horror movie. hooray!

First cinema movie for me: The Wrestler.
Mickey Rourke does some of the finest acting I've ever seen. Its like he has become the titular character for this movie.
Highly recommended.
Also, as a fan of the backstage shennanigins of wrestling, I found this pretty much demonstrated everything I've been telling people for years: wrestling might be fake but you can't fake falling through a table!

Which is probably why my friend chose it ... With all due respect, your friend is an evil (and scary) human being. As genius as those guys are, there was nothing that could save that episode. Now if you want a movie full of nothing that is somehow made hilarious, go for Starfighters. I just saw Starfighters... That was a film where literally NOTHING happens. Even the Commentary couldn't save it ... Should've gone for Village of the Giants like I initially wanted........

Paul Blart: Mall Cop
It's no masterpiece, but it's still pretty funny.
Plus, if you factor in that the other options are Bride Wars and The Unborn...well, what would you have done?

Now if you want a movie full of nothing that is somehow made hilarious, go for Starfighters. I just saw Starfighters... That was a film where literally NOTHING happens. Indeed. I disagree. It isn't my favorite episode, but I think they did well with it, especially considering the lack of material to work with. In retrospect I realize I probably did the episode a disservice by talking it up so highly. It's one of those you grow to like on repeat viewings, and I enjoy having MST3K on in the background when I do chores around the house, so Starfighters had plenty of time to grow on me the way it has. Village of the Giants, eh? Haven't seen that.

I guess it may be a case of comparing to the first episodes I ever saw, which were Space Mutiny, Mitchell and Egah, all of which I thought were hilarious. Heck, I liked Manos My friend has pretty much every MST3K he can get his hands on. When I go over, he let's me choose one. Since I was going purely on film title, Village of the Giants sounded ripe for hilarity. I ended up with Starfighters because your comments made me interested. It was funny just that the film was SO bad

Yeah. Me too. Somehow there's actually more going on in that movie than Starfighters. That's when you know you really failed at making a movie: when Manos: The Hand of Fate out-actions your film. I like your friend as a human being based solely on this fact. Well to make up for it I suggest Werewolf, Cave Dwellers, Pod People, Hobgoblins,Prince of Space.....that's all I can think of off the top of my head to recommend. Cave Dwellers is the only one I didn't like at first, and now I'm not sure why. It's now one of my favorites.

I just realized I haven't been to the movies, yet, this year. I'm really depressed, now.

I haven't either, which would be depressing until you look at what's out:
Bedtime Stories Bride Wars Hotel for Dogs Marley and Me My Bloody Valentine 3D Rachel Getting Married Paul Blart: Mall Cop Underworld: Rise of the Lycans The Unborn Valkyrie
The only stuff in the theater I have any interest in are Gran Torino and The Wrestler(which just opened in very limited release in NC)

I, too, haven't had much interest in the stuff out in theaters right now. I like to think of it as I'm saving myself for Watchmen.

Finally got to the theater last night for The Wrestler
I'm very pleased this was the first one for me this year. Excellent film. And it's definitely required viewing if you've ever considered yourself a wrestling fan.

We had our first two theater experiences this week -- Taken (decent) and Coraline (awesome).
