While 2008 saw more than its share of celebrity deaths, I think we can agree that all of them pale in comparison with the passing of the Batman. Long thought an urban legend, the Batman devoted his life to defending Gotham City from a neverending cavalcade of mobsters and madmen. Confirmed reports indicate that on January 14, 2009, the Batman broke his sacred oath never to use a gun and killed the mad god Darkseid, but was in turn struck by the Anti-Life Equation and destroyed. His body was recovered by longtime colleague Superman. The Batman is survived by sidekick Robin.
In unrelated news, billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne is missing and presumed dead. He is survived by his three black-haired, athletic adopted sons and one illegitimate son.

I saw this thread and thought "Don't tell me Adam West died."
Now I'm just thinking "hrmh?"

geez, Drew. It didn't come in the mail, yet. Spoiler. Granted, the whole 'Batman RIP' title was a clue...

I see what you did there... but I think Jade's death was more tragic. One of the thousands of causalities of one of the thousands of infinite crisis-...es....

I saw this thread and thought "Don't tell me Adam West died." Same here. As for Bruce Wayne, if he looks anything like George Clooney- give him my number!

don't worry: he's totally okay. sort of.
batman got hit with the omega SANCTION, not the omega EFFECT. the omega effect burns you utterly out of existence: you're never coming back.
the omega sanction, which is what happened to mister miracle in the 'seven soldiers' event, is: you live your life over and over again and it gets worse and worse every time. but mister miracle escaped from it, as the spirit of freedom and the world's best escape artist.
guess who else is a pretty good escape artist?
(answer: batman!)

Christian Bale will always be American Psycho. I've grown too attached to Michael Keaton as Batman. Bring him and Tim Burton back and I'll cough up $9.50 for a ticket.

Mainstream comic deaths mean nothing. I’m not even sure why the comic industry thinks it’s actually a big deal anymore. The “death” of Superman in the early 90’s pretty much forever ruined any real impact that a main character’s death might bring to any future story line.
For some real tragedy pickup some of the more independent comics such The Walking Dead or Sleeper.
PS – When I saw the title I thought of Adam West as well. Thank Jebus that the mayor of Quahog is still with us!

Mainstream comic deaths mean nothing. I’m not even sure why the comic industry thinks it’s actually a big deal anymore. The “death” of Superman in the early 90’s pretty much forever ruined any real impact that a main character’s death might bring to any future story line. While I think there's a lot of truth to that, I'd never say that they mean nothing. Yes, anyone looking to buy Infinite Crisis 6 so they can own the last appearance of Batman ever is going to be sorely disappointed, but character death is something that can impact plotlines and stories for years to come. Especially when it's a person who is as great a symbol as he is a hero. What happens to Robin, Nightwing, Alfred, et al? What happens when The Joker finds out that Batman has been french fried? Or Two Face? Or Talia al'Ghul? Those are ideas worth exploring. He won't be gone forever--lets face it, Batman is a business; it would be like killing off Mickey Mouse--but it creates a lot of great What Happens Next scenarios that will be fun to watch. Look at Captain America! The book is the best it's been in 40 years! EDIT: Oh, for the record, I really hated that Batman used a gun. And also that, for a guy with the best rogues gallery in history, DC decided to kill him with frakkin Darkseid. I've always hated Darkseid and this was a stupid way for Bats to go down.
