I read a book when I was in school called "Helen's Nest" and I'm trying to track it down.
It was about a group of friends who find an ants nest and try to "help" it. Helen, one of the friends, becomes one of the ants in the nest and it goes in to detail about living in a colony and the effects of humans on it.
It was bizarre but I wonder if anyone else has heard of it?
