I didn't like Franklin either, but I could empathize with him a bit... and I feel he was the only character in the film with any depth, too.

But, the good part about Franklin(or any annoying character in a slasher film) is that we get to watch him be brutally murdered.

Love interests. Period. There are examples of well-written characters who end up with the main character in the end - Sigourney Weaver's character in Ghostbusters comes to mind - but odds are these characters are there to fill some sort of Hollywood obligation that the main character needs a mate in order to be happy. Since we're supposed to be specific in this thread, I'll mention the chick from Miracle at St. Anna (you can substitute any love interest character you want, though). The fact that I can't remember her name says a lot about how interesting the character was. Every line she spoke was some form of exposition (I'll leave aside the dubiousness of a peasant girl having intimate knowledge of Nazi military tactics), and about an hour later, she's got her top off and she's "hugging" one of the protagonists. No personality, no distinguishing traits, all she provided was exposition and soft-core porn. EDIT: sorry for repeatedly using the word "character"...I don't own a thesaurus.

sorry for repeatedly using the word "character"...I don't own a thesaurus. Well... "theatrical avatar" does require a little more linguistic agility to work in casually.

Oh, if Bruce Campbell's plate-over-head smashing antics alone weren't cloying enough to make me reach for the "Eject" button on my DVD player remote, that "waddya say we... have some champagne, uh baby?" would have done it. "After all...I'm a man and...you're a woman. Least last time I checked..." This moment goes down for me in the absolute worst dialogue and line readings I've ever been subjected to in film history catagory. Compared to that, most of Troll 2 looks professional!
