As usual, I can't help bitching about a movie long before I've seen it: It could be a great movie, but there is the temptation to make Just Another Thriller, riding the ol' CSI wave and hoping the shocking brutality of the crimes gets attention. Good luck with that.
One thing I find remarkable about the characters is the relationship between Scarpetta and Marino the detective. They have earned their mutual respect and grown accustomed to each other, but at the most fundamental level the intellectual and the primitive mind will never trust each other. And there is Scarpetta herself: frail but tough, insecure but stubborn, weary but unrelenting. (Also, I don't think she possesses remarkable looks.)
Does that scream Angelina Jolie at you? Maybe she can pull it of (though I don't know a precedent). At the very least, they'll need lots of airbrush to cover those tats.
Fox 2000 is acquiring rights to Patricia Cornwell’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta series. The suspense thriller, which won’t be tied specifically to any of the 16 books about the opera-loving coroner, will be developed as a vehicle for Angelina Jolie.
