So I've recently joined the ranks of "people with an MP3 player that actually does more than play MP3's", and have discovered the great wonder and joy that is the podcast.
What I'm wondering is: do any of you guys follow any podcasts, and if so, could you share 'em? So far I've got the Penny Arcade one (and loving it, by the way), but I'm itching to add more.

I'm actually not trying to be sarcastic here (I know, weird), but I thought those things ceased to be in 2007, a year after their surge of popularity.

Sorry, Poolie. I only listen to one podcast, a radio show that you have to buy a subscription to, so I doubt it would interest you.

Two that come to mind are The Ricky Gervais Show and the Onion News podcast. That's all I got - unless you're looking for a scriptwriting podcast, in which case, I recommend "On the Page."

Rett - you may be right, but there are still some out there!
Drew - ah yes, your "paid internet subscriptions". Doubt my wife would appreciate it.
Oogie - thanks!

Drew - ah yes, your "paid internet subscriptions". Doubt my wife would appreciate it. In this case, it was my wife who got me the subscription for our anniversary. Since the local station that carried these guys went off the air, and I can barely get them from the Jersey Shore station (and not at all on cloudy days), it was a great gift. -D

So they do still exist. I still laugh at my school's hilariously out of date Housing Page which has a Podcast! button so you can be IN THE KNOW!
Another bureaucratic waste of my money in an attempt to catch onto what's 'hip' and 'poppin fresh'.

So, I'm way late to the party (sorry), but I've fallen in love with a couple of podcasts just in the last month or so and thought I should share for anyone interested. EDIT: Wow, I wrote a lot on Dan Carlin. Sorry. But he really is just that good.1) Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. Pound for pound, I think HH is the best history podcast on the web. I tried several others and mostly found them so stuffy and bogged down in the names, dates, and details that I forgot why I wanted to listen in the first place. Dan, by contrast, is energetic, enthusiastic, and has a piercing way of looking at things. He's not an academic (he calls himself merely a "fan" of history) but is a better history teacher than almost any other I've had. He has a great head for analysis and knows how to introduce the human element into events that are larger than life. Out of the free episodes on the website (1-12 are available under 'merchandise' for $1.99 each), I would recommend: #27-28: Ghosts of the Ostfront I & II - These are his most recent ones, dealing with the WW2's Russian Front. I believe Part III is soon to follow. #26: Addicted to Bondage - A fascinating look at the institution of slavery and it's place in society. #21-23: Punic Nightamres I, II, and III - An epic history of the Roman/Carthaginian wars. #20: History Under the Influence - Dan speculates on the impact of drugs and alcohol on course of history, including a list of historical figures he wants to make pee in a cup. #17: Judgment at Nineveh - The story of history's 'first Nazis,' the long-forgotten Assyrian empire, and thoughts on the eventual end of our society today. #13: Bubonic Nukes - Musings about The Black Death and how it may reflect our own potential nuclear-apocalypse future. 2) Dan Carlin's Common Sense. Dan's other show, focusing on politics and current events. It's like Hardcore History but louder and angrier. He's very much an Independent, quite liberal in some areas and conservative in others, and is bound to make you mad at him eventually. Even if you don't agree with his politics, I think he's a voice worth listening to. Certainly moreso than the talking heads on FOX and NBC. 3) The Tolkien Professor. This is a podcast that's just started recently by Professor Corey Olsen. Professor Olsen is (apparently) one of the leading Tolkien scholars in North America but feels the author's 'fantasy' label has made him an academic outcast. After trying and failing to get his university to allow him a course on Tolkien, he has started this podcast where he will conduct college-level readings and lectures on The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. It's still very early on, with only chapters 1-6 of The Hobbit completed, but I'm impressed with his enthusiasm and his respect for the material. Plus, it's nice to reread Tolkien's work with a guiding hand, so to speak. I highly recommend all three of these. If anyone tries them, let me know what you think!

I just listened to chapter 1 and will definitely listen to everything he puts up. Much obliged, Al! Do you know how quick he is with new episodes? Not very, I guess.

Glad you're enjoying it, Dex!
Unfortunately, they don't get posted on any kind of schedule and the new school year means that output is likely to keep slowing down. To his credit, though, he does his best to supplement the actual chapter studies with Q&A sessions and chats with other Tolkienites.
I usually just read the next two or three chapters after a podcast and then set the book aside until iTunes downloads something new.
