i have absolutely no problem with spoiling a film for myself; 9 times out of 10 (arguably) knowing what's coming doesn't affect my enjoyment of the work itself, and occasionally i forget what i knew anyway and only remember in afterthought (just like learning from bad relationships).
but my friend and i were just lamenting the times when, mostly online, people went above and beyond in their efforts to ruin a film for anyone and everyone: posting a comment on a review where all the text is the twist ending, who lives and dies, blah blah blah. stuff that you can't help but read and absorb in the split-second of skimming before you realize what you're reading and look away.
anyway, who does this and why? i'm assuming virginal socially-deprived idiots with internet access being their sole means of any human contact, but perhaps i'm just playing to the stereotype game. any thoughts?

I have no idea what kind of person does this, but I absolutely HATE those people. Personally, I'm pretty much a spoiler hound. Unless it's a movie that I'm really, really excited about, I'll go out of my way to find spoilers. But I understand that some people want to walk into movies knowing absolutely nothing, and that's fine with me.
What I don't understand is why anyone would want to ruin a movie for anyone else. It's just mean! Mean and unnecessary. The only thing they gain from it is the sick pleasure of ruining someone else's good time.
I assume that their parents didn't love them enough, so now they have to snatch joy from strangers on the internet.

Well I could tell you what sort of person does this, but Justin would kick me off the forums. But as to WHY I think aarg hit pretty close. Yeah, online seems to be the worst. I've seen people go into threads that had nothing to do with the movie (or sometimes book or show) just to spoil it for the completely unprepared. I'm just glad to know that most of these types will never contribute to the gene pool.
Personally, as a general rule, I hate spoilers. 1) I watch a lot of twist and/or weird movies and mysteries, it kills me to accidentally find out what happens, but if someone tells me just to be a jerk? Seriously ticks me off. And yes it has happened. 2) There's some movies that I know I'm going to watch regardless of what I hear. Movies that fall into this category don't usually have twists, but spoilers are just pointless noise. 3) I like knowing as little about a movie as possible.
Though sometimes I do ask specifically for spoilers, or if my friends and family know there's something in it I'll hate (I mean really hate) they'll warn me that it's in there. Mind you, if there's clowns they never warn me about that, but insist on watching with me so they experience the reaction first hand. I love my peoples.
And then you have people like me and my brothers who will straight faced tell you a fake ending. Though we make it something out there and it depends on whether the listener has a sense of humor if they pick up on it or not. My favorite is "Everybody dies in the end." for romantic comedies.

Is there something specific about these people? I believe those who behave like sick people on line will use any way to accomplish that, be it trolling, spoiling movies, whatever.
The effect of spoilers is most devious though, I agree. Luckily, I usually have little trouble avoiding them.
