having just gotten home at about 4:15 a.m. from what turned out to be a 12-hour endless-wine-and-pizza-white-elephant-late-christmas-gift-exchange-movie-marathon party, i think i can say with some certainty that although the party overall was a blast (going through hundreds of dollars of alcohol and using my late turn in the gift exchange to steal a sweet serving set of martini glasses were two highlights, amongst others) renting the godfather trilogy as the movies to watch was a BAD CHOICE.
next time, it's indiana jones all the way.
last time, though, we kicked *** by hijacking the theater at a small well-known socal college and watching the (then) brand new star wars dvds on a gigantic screen with super-duper sound system. in addition to using our friend (who pretty much ran the theater) to explore every nook and cranny of the place, and throw stuff off the roof when we climbed up there. awesome.
that said, i've never been one for serious movie marathon get-togethers. a couple james bond ones and one horror marathon are the only others i can remember at the university. but i'm sure some of you have stories. i want to hear them, because i won't feel completely trashed until around noon later today!

Hey, I've got a couple of marathons that I'm particularly proud of.
One day I watched the entire first season of 24 in real-time, from midnight to midnight. That is an epic undertaking, and I don't think I'd do it again. I don't know anyone else that's done that.
Also, when Return of the King came out, my buddy works at a movie theater, so I saw the extended editions of FOTR and TT before the theatrical cut of ROTK the day before it came out. We had a bet going where if you fell asleep, you had to buy everyone McBreakfast. No-one fell asleep though.

Lots of great marathons....
My finacee got the box set for Firefly and the dvd of Serenity, so we watched every single episode nonstop, paused long enough to get fresh drinks from the fridge, and moved on to Serenity. We started around lunchtime, and weren't done entirely until about the same time the next day.
But the mother of all marathons was the LotR one the Books To Movies club I was in did. We got everyone's extended copies of everything and the old cartoon versions. We started with The Hobbit, went bravely into the 1978 Lord of the Rings, followed by the animated Return of the King. We took ten or fifteen to put some Visene in our eyes (we'd been staring at a huge TV in a dark room for HOURS) and then popped in the first of the extended releases, putting no more than 10 minutes between films.
That was a whole weekend event. Most of us skipped school on Monday to catch up on sleep lol

Wow... as far as movie marathons go, I've really only done one that's of any significance. That would be my LOTR marathon when ROTK came out.
I've also done my own personal marathon of the longest films we own that I can stand to watch... the list was Amadeus, Tombstone, Return of the King, Patton (not really long, but I'm not a huge fan of war movies), Gettysburg, and all three Indiana Jones flicks. I must say, I've got quite a bit of stamina.

When I was in high school my friends and I did A Trilogy Marathon: all 3 Indiana Jones films, all 3 Die Hard films, and all 3 Star Wars films (this was in the days before midichloreans), and I am proud to say we did finish all of them. We did go kind of stir crazy by the end of them, though: at one point I was finishing off a cake that we were going to eat during the Die Hard movies, and my friends were trying to beat the door down to commandeer the icing for a much-needed sugar fix. Good times.

On another message board I go to, I know a few people did that the first season. I don't know if many did subsequent seasons, because it was too hard to stay away from spoilers. They took it very seriously. One person said something along the lines of "I eat when Jack Bauer eats. I sleep when he sleeps."

A few summers ago, I decided it would be neat to work a night job. Where I got this idea, I will never know. Nevertheless, I found myself gainfully employed stocking shelves from 10pm to 7am at our local 24-hour Super K-Mart. The shift went something like this:
8pm: Wake up 9:55pm: Go to Work (living close has advantages) 10pm-7am: Be Miserable 7:15am-12pm: eat dinner, read newspaper 12pm: Go to sleep
An odd way to live and I'm glad I didn't stay on for more than that one summer. It did, however, give me a wonderful opportunity to catch up on movies. Like most jobs, it was only a 5 days a week gig, and I would find myself with nothing to do on my days off because the rest of the world wasn't cool enough to be up with me from 2am to noon. So I decided to peruse my local (now sadly out of business) video store and began renting out trilogies. At usually 90 minutes to 2 hours apiece, my own personal film fests ate up a good portion of the night with room in between to hit up the all night Dunkin Donuts *and* brought me up to speed on exactly what happened in both Magnificent Seven sequels. This was also how I finally saw all three Die Hards, all six Death Wishes, most of the old Prisoner tv series, Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai trilogy, and every Marx Brother movie that ever made it's way to home video. Admittedly, marathons aren't nearly as much fun without people who enjoy them with, but it beats staring at the clock.

Um...I once watched Branagh's Hamlet (4+ hours) all in one go. I have partaken in a few anime marathons, but certainly not by choice.

I'm in the process of planning the first annual (or, heck, monthly) Iron Eyes Movie Marathon. These will be tremendous movie marathons, in the excess of 10-12 hours long, where whoever stays for the full ride from start to finish will get a t-shirt.
Our first IEMM will be all six Star Wars films.

Now THAT sounds like an experience.
I almost forgot my first mini-marathon... It was Johnny Depp themed. Chocolat, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Benny & Joon. It really just started out as me watching Chocolat, and then What's Eating Gilbert Grape was sitting unopened on the shelf. And the other two just followed.
I think, if I planned carefully, I could have a full-on Johnny Depp-a-thon. Sounds like fun...

Me and my cousin spent an entire Spring Break one year doing nothing but watching Episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I had gotten the first Season on DVD, and really liked it, and I made her watch it, and she was hooked.
We spent entire days sitting in the same room, with a blanket over the window so there wasn't any glare, the lights off, and the air conditioning as low as it would go, getting caught up in the DRAMAS of Buffy and Angel's doomed romance, Willow and Oz, Xander and Cordelia, Spike and Drusilla, etc., etc. God I love Buffy.
A while ago we also had a LotR marathon, where we spent a whole day just watching the extended editions of the 3 movies. It was awesome, and we developed the running joke of having Gandalf constantly jumping over the sides of things and flying away on a bird. Also my sister thought that Shelob was named Shiela, and as me and my cousin laughed she kept repeating "guy! I said Sheila! Come on guys!"
This led to her acquiring the nickname of Shiela.
We have also had a Cowboy Bebop marathon in which nothing very exciting happened (besides experiencing the awesomeness of the anime) except my cousin, her boyfriend, and I all thought that it would be a good idea to buy individual pizzas for ourselves. And around Xmas we had a Wolf's Rain marathon, in which we developed the running joke of Darcia going "I've finally set them free," and flying away.
We always meant to have a Star Wars marathon, but we never got around to it. I guess now would be a perfect time, since all of the prequels are out on DVD and whatnot. Gotta put that on the to-do list.
God I'm sounding so cool right now! Woo!

Branagh's Hamlet counts? I've done that all at once at least one time. Classic.

i keep meaning to have a marathon of 'the prisoner' with all my friends that i've been talking it up with for like the past few years. or at least the seven important mcgoohan-approved episodes.
right now, lame as it sort of it, i'm actually excited about having a star wars marathon. why? because i got my illegal dvds of the orginal laserdiscs of the theatrical films. I'M SO HAPPY. i'm happy to do without crystal clear picture and coloring (those new dvds ARE nice, i'll admit) for han murdering greedo, no jabba or boba in epIV, and my much-cherished ewok song closing out the trilogy.
there are actually a few college girls who will willingly participate as long as we skip the prequels. consider it done, ladies!
stupid question, but: the branagh hamlet is really good, isn't it?
