I actually started to watch American Splendor last night, but fell asleep during it. Not because it was boring, but because I was really tired.

One thing I wasn't sure of--was everyone in the movie an actor (even the people that were supposed to be the "real characters"), or was it actually based on a true story?

The real Harvey, Joyce, Danielle and Toby play the present-time versions of themselves in the movie. Very strange when you see an actor playing someone meeting that person. As far as what the movie is based on, it's based on the comic series "American Splendor", which is based on Harvey Pekar's life. I recently read the American Splendor Anthology, and the movie is a fairly accurate translation.
