Is there anyone in the world that does NOT like The Princess Bride? I think everyone loves to see ME as the hero of a movie. ;D Oh, and if you didn't get that, read my bio a few pages back on this thread.

You people know me by now! But for the newcomers, lemme sum up:
The handle is Uber. It's a shortening for Ubergeek. Blame my friends, who gave me a nickname then decided that they didn't want to pronounce two syllables. Buncha slackers that I hang out with.
Anyway, some more info: The real name is James. I live in the general area of Houston, TX, USA, Planet Earth. I am 26, unmarried but currently dating, have lived in my house for nearly a year and work in the computer industry. The avatar is theoretically a caffeine molecule, but I'm a computer engineer, not a chemist. Outside of reading this site and watching the movies, I tend to be found in the kitchen cooking (and then eating), singing in karaoke bars or spending time with my sweetums.

Is there anyone in the world that does NOT like The Princess Bride? I don't think my wife likes that movie, but she is subject to periodic bouts of evil anyway, so I try not to hold it against her.

Did these anomalies happen to give reasons for why they could possibly find enough fault in The Princess Bride to hate it?

Okay, I guess I'll take a stab at this. I was born four hundred years ago in the highlands of Scotland... Well, maybe it wasn't quitethat long ago, and it might have been closer to Philadelphia than Glasgow, but I digress. My name is Sue, I'm a *coughthirtysomethingcough* divorced mom of two living in Wisconsin. I have certification in equine and stable management, which obviously explains why I currently work as manager of a convenience store. I'm also a writer. No, really! My first book was published last summer. (It's a literary novella out of a very small press, so don't all of you go flocking to Amazon.com at once.) I'm currently working on a full length novel with a certain MRFH regular and yes Justin, she has sent me baked goods and they were terrific. BWAHAHAHA!!!! My avatar is not the one I'd ordinarily use, but I'm only a geek wannabe and have no idea how to get it set up. In the meantime, the bunny works in a semi-subtle Holy Grail sort of way. I enjoy a wide variety of movies, but as I get older, I'm less drawn to the buckets 'o blood, cascading intestines and ruptured spleen cinematic extravaganzas that are so prevalent. Unless there's some really good dialogue, of course. Or a plot. I like a plot. My list of favorites would include (among many others), Moulin Rouge!, Shrek, Trainspotting, Primal Fear, A Few Good Men, Glory, Love Actuallyand anything Indiana Jones or Monty Python. I'd say Clerks as well, but it's just too much like real life. On TV, I try not to miss Stargate SG-1, Animal Precinct (my dogs watch it) and CSI. In things on paper, I'm working my way through the Terry Pratchett Discworld books. Love 'em. I think that about covers it! Sue

I'm hosting half the avatars around here, I'd be happy to hold onto one more. Just send me a private message. Same goes for anyone else!

(an emotion explained more fully and in a better way by my favorite author, *PLUG!* Orson Scott Card www.hatrack.com ) Orson Scott Card is a great writer... I loved Ender's Game, it's one of my favorite books. Read the whole series, but haven't yet expanded to much of his other work (just read Lost Souls recently, but that's it). Anything to recommend? I'm always looking for new books to try out...

Well, guess I should probably introduce myself... I'm Duckie (Howard, get it? ). Been lurking on the board for a while, ever since my wife Lissa joined MRFH as a reviewer. Just recently started posting, figured I'd come out of hiding a bit after seeing a thread entitle, "Lissa's husband". A guy's gotta defend himself, ya know! Movie likes - have a soft spot for 80's flicks (Clare, I've probably seen >20 John Cusack movies, we'll have to compare notes sometime), but also a big fan of Kevin Smith's work, as well as many, many other genres. Really open to sitting through new and unique movies... never walked out of a movie, although a few have REALLY tempted me over the years. ;D Maybe I'll sneak them into my wife's list of movies to review, see just how long it takes her to no longer trust my judgement in movies! Real life - I'm an engineer, working on trying to reduce emissions from trucks. Lots of opportunities there. Met my wife Lissa while at school, we got married just a little bit over a year ago. I'm a bookworm, get a lot of time to read on the road. Really into action/thrillers (think I may have read enough serial killer novels to get on an FBI watchlist!). Rather eclectic mix of authors that I look for - anything from Ken Follett to Nick Hornby, Dan Brown to Terence Strong, Stephen King to Kinky Friedman. Just finished Mystic River, thought the movie was good, but the book was better... My avatar's a shivan dragon, from Magic: The Gathering trading cards. Spent waayyyy too much money on the game a decade ago - picture a bunch of engineers, waiting around at the game store for the latest shipment to arrive. We were worse than a gang of kids when the new Topps baseball cards came out each year! I really like the conversational approach for the reviews, think this is a very unique site. Hope to expand my horizons a bit, and maybe return the favor to others on the board...

Try out Card's anthology collection Maps in a Mirror. It shows his full range of talents from fairy tales to sci-fi, to horror. All are very good short stories, and some are still powerful to me. Coincidentally enough, this collection is going to be re-released this month in paperback. Previously there was only one printing in hardcover way back in 1990, I still have my copy! Also, his other two big "series" apart from the Ender series: The Homecoming Saga - a rewrite of the Old Testament story of Moses and his people written as science fiction (!), and The Alvin Maker series which chronicles an alternate history of colonial America - one in which the states never seceeded from the crown, and Native American and so-called "folk" magic is real. Both are good, but you should definately grab up Maps in a Mirror while you can, it may never be printed again!

Dang, I ain't even thought of that game in a couple of years, and it's been nearly four years since I gave all my cards away to my best friend's two younger brothers. "Magic: The Gathering! It's like crack...FOR NERDS!" Say... nine months of evil? Actually, she was pretty cool for those nine months. The last three, however, have been something else...
