Yoinked from the good lads of Penny Arcade: See this trailer for some movie called Casshern. I don't know the first thing about this movie. I don't. It's weird looking and Japanese, and I'm sure you'll reach that conclusion too. But my God, if that's not the closest thing to bringing (for lack of a better term) anime to the live action screen (far more so than even the Matrix), then I don't know what could possibly be. Oh. And Madler? GIANT ROBOTS.

Weird and wild. Like the newest cut scenes from a Final Fantasy game.
IGN had this to say about Casshern:
Apparently, the movie is based on an old 35-episode anime called Casshan: Robot Hunter. I don't know how closely the film that this trailer advertises mirrors the original series, but here's the setup:
A scientist invents a robot for pollution control. Seems harmless enough right? Well, the robot, BK-1 or the Black King, goes nuts and sets out to enslave mankind using a robot army. Yes, it's a little clich?, but you still gotta hate it when that happens. Well, the scientist's son somehow merges his body with that of a robot and becomes a super-powered android named Casshan. If it sounds crazy, it's because it is. He then takes on the robot armies with the help of his robot dog (stay with me) and his childhood friend, Luna. Again, I'm just telling you what I've been able to gather online so apologies to fans of the series (are there any there?) if I've missed some important detail.

WHOAH. Okay, I WILL see this. If I have to finally bring myself to learn Japanese, if I have to pay someone to sub it for me, if I have to just watch the whole movie and have no clue what the heck they're saying, I WILL see this.

Well Bok Choi! and colour me impressed. Kinda reminded me of the first Samurai Jack episode. Now if only they'd try something like Patlabor or Robotech.

I actually remember seeing one episode of Casshan: Robot Hunter, repeatedly. Allow me to elaborate, with a little story:
Once upon a time in the glory days of the early 90s, (My area of expertise) the Sci-Fi Channel would do a Saturday morning airing of a particular anime, selected from a pool of about twelve total.
Casshan was a member thereof, and one of the only things I remember about the one episode (Or possible movie.) I saw was that Casshan's female compatriot's breasts jumped all over the place with little to no provocation.
Mind you, this would've been just before the beginning of the Boob Animation Era, which started in May of 1994, if I've got my history correct.

How would a robot control pollution?
I might have to see it just to see if there's an explanation for that.

Simple, it just wanders a city sampling the air, and when it finds a car without a catalytic converter it blasts it with a cannon. Fortuneately most new cars without catalytic converters are (from what I hear) those low-slung, highly upgraded death missiles that I wouldn't miss on the road in the least. I should call Honda and see about buying a modified Asimo....

One of my bigger geek friends (rated on a scale of 1-10) is in a state of underwear-changing ecstacy about the upcoming films of both this and the live action version of weird Japanese Giant Robot series Neon Genesis: Evangelion.
I have no experience with Casshern at all, but what I've seen of Evangelion tells me it might make for an interesting film.
Of course, Giant Robot fans also have a live action Transformers movie in the pipeline to look forward to, though my 80's nostaligia sense tells me that its not going to be a patch on the original Transformers:The Movie.

I'd think if you have enough technology to come up with this sort of robot you'd have enough technology to implement clean energy. Although Justin has a really good point.

We're such nerds. We're looking up money laundering... I mean hybrid electric-hydrogen low-pollution robots in the dictionary!

We're such nerds. We're looking up money laundering... I mean hybrid electric-hydrogen low-pollution robots in the dictionary! The scary part of this is that it ties in very close to what I really do for a living.... not the robot part, but the catalytic converter / low pollution thingie. Hadn't thought about getting into the robot-building business, maybe I bring it up at our next brainstorming session at work... ;D

It's like being a Nursery Worker at a very scary, slightly intelligent day care center in here...
