Trailers can be the coolest things ever. One of the best feelings is going to the movies and seeing the trailer for a movie that, to you, is "must see", especially if you didn't even know the movie in question existed. I still remember fondly going to see "Grosse Point Blank" and my first viewing of the Alien Resurrection trailer.
Trailers can also tell you everything you need to know about a movie, giving you enough information to decide whether you actually want to see it or not. Like "Speed Racer": I saw the name "Wachowski Brothers" and knew everything I needed to know
Trailers can also fool you in to thinking that a film is something it isn't.
Enter "Clone Wars".
Repeated viewings of this trailer made it look like it had been made on a Xbox with about as much scripting as an in-game cut scene... let's say that I was less than impressed. But I also knew that I was going to see it, in spite of this.
Having just been to see this film, I'm happy to report that it is actually worth watching. Kinda.
You see, anything Star Wars related is a double-edged sword these days. On the one hand, you know whatever you go to see, be it a prequel or a spin-off, is going to be trite, clichéd and aimed squarely at humans who won't see a razor for a good few years.
But, on the other hand, its Star Wars.
I'm far from a rabid fanboy but if you show me a lightsaber, I will see the movie. Heck, if they released a version of "Mamma Mia!" completed with special edition lightsaber duel, I'd be first in line at the cinematorium...Well, I'd be in the queue, at least.
Clone Wars isn't great but it isn't bad either. The animation is good, stylized and effective. The action is pretty good too and if you like your lightsaber battles, there's enough to keep you interested.
Its just...well...ultimately pointless.
Every man, woman and Rodian has seen the Star Wars movies and therein lies the problem: you know the future of these characters and therefore, this entire plot is just kinda...meh.
Since the future is already written in "Revenge of the Sith", the principle players (Obi Wan, Annakin etc) have Plot Immunity. So who is there left in the movie for you to cheer and invest any kind of empathy in?
Well realising that this is an inherent flaw, the writers introduce a new character: yes, you guessed, a young padawan learner who also happens to be a rash kid trying to prove their worth .................................... And no, its not Rick Hunter.
Yet, the new character isn't as annoying as you might imagine and the film at least feels like Star Wars, even if only three of the actors from the movies reprise their roles.
The film is interesting and diverting enough that I don't feel like I've wasted my time but I still can't get away from the feeling that there wasn't really much point to the pretty dull plot.
So? More prequel Star Wars stuff. I think that says it all.
Worth the ticket price? If you have some 9 to 13 year olds to entertain or if you like Star Wars and have no pressing engagements, then you could do worse. Otherwise, go watch The Dark Knight again.
