yeah, there are people in this world of ours who will tell you, absolutely straight-faced, that 'pirates of the caribbean: dead man's chest' was an awful movie.
AN AWFUL MOVIE.
what's that all about? is that what you think? do you know people who think that? what's going on here?

Awful by no means, not even bad. In fact, excellent in many parts. But the parts that weren't excellent really suffer- they feel awkward or tacked on or redundant.
For comparison: Curse of the Black Pearl would be one of my favorite comfort movies ever if it were an hour shorter. However, I couldn't tell what exactly you could remove that wouldn't hurt the finished film. Dead Man's Chest, has the same problem, but this time around, I have no problems saying exactly what needs to go to tighten that film up (ie- the entire first hour)

Very very fun. My impression was that it was a movie made for the fans of the first, for better and for worse. So there's the surprise at the end, lots more Sparrow, the appearance of Bootstrap, inventive fight scenes, Orlando Bloom shutting up, general silliness, etc. But that also means the storytelling wanders and meanders and gets distracted sometimes.

There were parts that could've been tightened up, and it is obviously more of a nod to what has been and a set up of what will come.
That said, I still really liked it (I loved the first, so tough competition), enough so to buy it, watch it, and joyfully anticipate watching all three together someday.
Besides it's got pirates, so automatic awesome.

Visually PotC: DMC was amazing but story wise it was weaker then the first film. It had it's good moments but a lot of the comedic moments seemed a bit forced. I am certainly happy that I saw on the big screen and will one day own it.

I think it's pretty much got middle child syndrome. The series stands to end wonderfully with the third film, but DMC kind of had a lot more stuffed into it than it could handle.
I couldn't call it awful though! Bill Nighy rocks!

The series stands to end wonderfully with the third film This is a pure fangirl squeeage here, so you've been warned. I agree that the third movie does stand to end the series wonderfully, even though I think I've heard talk they're discussing a fourth one. But it's going to take a lot to end the third movie as well as they did with the second. I mean, "Bring me that horizon" is fantabulous, but the sheer fangirl emotion I felt at the end of DMC outstrips that.

Sorry, but I had to vote for DMC being lame. It was just so absurd in parts that I couldn't get into it. If they took out the water wheel my impression might have been different, because that's really the only bit I remember, and that sucked.

i guess i can't believe people who adore the first film DON'T like the second, since (in my opinion) it takes all the popular stuff from the first one and tweaks it a little bit so you're like "whoa, i STILL dig it but now it's a little more complex and insidious!"
but some of that stuff is so subtle it flies under the radar, so i sort of understand why instead people are like "it's a straight-up remake but with a new squid guy, just like 'superman returns!'"
but it still hurts my heart.

I wish you'd made a category for "indifferent and will probably only watch the first POTC in the future." It was long and repetative and and and and....

Yeah, this one was definitely too long. And I really don't think it's all just exposition for the third. It all just felt too gratuitous. And I felt like they couldn't think of new stuff to throw in and so they took the scenarios and jokes from the first film and put them here. And even though I loved this scene....I didn't understand the whole caannibal thing. It took up so much time and didn't progress the plot at all. And I'm really starting to get sick of Jack Sparrow. He's too over the top. *ducks tomatoes thrown by Cpn. Sparrow enthusaists.*
THAT BEING SAID, it was a hundred-thousand times better than I was expecting.
PS - Barbossa's so much more badass than Davy Jones. PPS - Skeletons so much more badass than fishy-sea-man-monster-guys. PPPS - DMC Elizabeth's so much more badass than CotBP Elizabeth.
PPPPS - Ninjas rock.

I thought it was awesome just because it was a huge thrill ride of a movie. Sure, that can get exausting very quickly but funny banter and cool cgi help you along. I will say that I prefered the first one, but DMC was still awesome.

We should have a thread regarding how many of us love exorbitant amounts of CGI. I for one do not. In moderation it's fine but the gross abuses by Lucas and others has really turned me off.
