Okay, I'm frustrated. No, not sexually, but thanks for asking.
My work computer all of the sudden decided that it won't let me access the internet. That's not too strange in and of itself, for a troubleshooting problem, but this is really weird.
See, it'll connect (it's dial-up, the church won't spring for DSL or cable), it'll do a bit of handshaking and exchange maybe 3K of info back and forth between the server and my computer... but it won't load up any web pages. It won't log on to MSN messenger. If I go into explorer, it just gives me a DNS error ("Page Not Found").
So I fiddled with it, then called the server tech support, which said, "Hey, it's a simple fix! Just manually add the DNS settings and there you go!"
Of course, that did not work. Did the exact same thing.
So I spent some more time on it, getting frustrated... I'm not a wiz with computers, but I'm fairly capable of figuring out problems, but this one's stumped me. I spent two more days on the phone with their tech support, which had me reload Communications onto the computer, reset the Dial-Up settings like fifteen times... no go. Eventually, after going through their *entire* tech support staff and two of their engineers, they told me point blank they were giving up on the problem. They couldn't figure it out.
What we do know is the following, so I'm throwing this problem at you to see if any of you guys can help me out:
I'm using Windows ME (I know)... don't have enough RAM to install XP and don't have any other Windows software.
It will dial in and connect. The problem is that we can ping websites if I use the numbered URL, but it won't recognize the DNS words (like http://www.mutantreviewers.com). So it obviously has something to do with the DNS, but the simple fix (of manually setting primary and secondary DNS settings) didn't work.
It's not the modem's problem, it's not the line or the connection.
No other error messages pop up.
Yay!
