SCTV and a number of the other shows and people you mentioned ARE funny. That's why it's such a joke that they try and raise Corner Gas to a peer level with people like John Candy, Eugene Levy, and so on. The list of funny and brilliantly comedic Canadians goes on forever. But they don't get their real recognition here in Canada. It's not until they're syndicated in the U.S. or they emigrate that anyone notices them
Read the article in Inc. a few months back by the retired Canadian television executive. He said the Canadian networks know they create nothing but garbage but the media is such a tightly knit, incestuous group that A compliments B, then B compliments C and so on until the circle is complete. The same people that sit on the Board of Directors for all the Canadian television networks are the same people who sit on the Board Of Directors of all the major Canadian print media. How do you think they're going to rate what is ostensibly their own product?
We know for a certain fact that film production companies create their own fake reviews written by fictitious reviewers just to fill theatre seats. And it works. Do you think television is any different?
Canada is a country with a rich tradition for world-class comedy and we export some of the funniest, most talented people in the world to other countries. So don't you think we deserve better than Brent Butt and Mike Bullard for domestic consumption?

Corner Gas is hilarious. The reason that Tara doesn't find it funny is most likely the same reason that the Americans don't find it funny, there is no laugh-tracks, heaven forbid a person need to think for him/herself while watching tv. Another great part about Corner Gas is the little-subtle history tidbits they throw in, if you pay attention you can find them.

Oh man, am I glad there isn't a laugh track on this show. The only time I can appreciate a laugh track is when it's done as a joke (like in the Tenacious D show)
Oscar: You can't just leave them there. That's pants! It would be a waste. A waste of pants. Wanda: Nobody likes pant waste.

I haven't started watching Corner Gas until recently and I have to say it's been growing on me. That Grey Cup episode was hilarious. Who would have thought life in Saskatchewan could even be MILDLY interesting.

Corner Gas is the lamest excuse for a sitcom imaginable. The fact that it actually is considered "hilarious," "gut-wrenchingly funny," and so on is an indication of how many people in this country have absolutely no life, or I.Q. To even compare this third rate piece of garbage to something as brilliant as Seinfeld is ridiculous. Read a few U.S. newspapers people. They describe Corner Gas as looking like it was produced by high school students with no apparent aptitude for comedy writing, timing or a general sense of what's actually funny. Saying Corner Gas is the best Canadian comedy is comparable to being the best hockey player in Brazil. I'm just going to go out on a limb here and assume that you're from America (since you advised us to "read a few U.S. Newspapers"). It's likely that if you are indeed an American, you will not get the comedy behind Corner Gas. You come from a land where the epitome of comedy is a guy screwing an apple pie and reality TV rules all. Now don't get me wrong, I can appreciate the wild and wacky comedies as much as the next person, but I also have an appreciation for that often over-looked form of humour; satire. All of the shows oogieboogieman mentioned (This Hour has 22 Minutes, Royal Canadian Air Farce, etc...), they all employ it. It's also the reason why I enjoy such BBC gems as The Office. So whether it's the fact that you're just not big on the satire, or you don't know what it's like growing up in a small town on the prairies in Canada (On a side, but oh so relevant note, I grew up in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Hence my deep and profound understanding and appreciation for the show), you should not dismiss the show because it doesn't appeal to mentally numb American critics. I close with this final thought: My thighs are hot for goat felons.

Oi, let me just point out that I'm blonde and that I actually intended to write "sarcasm", not "satire." It has been a very long day.

I bought my dad the DVD for Christmas. I'm pretty sure he likes it.
One of my other favorite quotes (Oscar and Hank broke into Oscar's friends house to find him dead) OSCAR: I'm taking his belt. HANK: Why? OSCAR: It's a funny story... (Cut to Oscar and his friend in a car) FRIEND: If I ever die I want you to take my belt. (Cut back to Hank and Oscar) HANK: That's not funny.

I don't watch much Canadian televison. About the only thing I've watched is The Red Green Show. Damn that show used to crack me up. My favorite bit was always the Handyman's Corner. I remember this one time, they put gull wing doors on a Dodge Dart. Using duct tape and a garage door opener. It was hilarious.
Remember, if the women don't find you handsome. They should at least find you handy.
