well, having just yesterday gotten the first volume of the new doctor who on dvd from england (three episodes: rose, the end of the world, and the unquiet dead), i have to say it seems quite awesome! i've only seen "rose" thus far, but it's pretty excellent, in a fun modern way.
it's sorta like new "battlestar galactica" compared to the old bg, though with a lot more potential for the original "doctor who" stuff (the eight prior doctors) to actually be "canon." for whatever that's worth.
can't wait to see the next two! i hope some of those wild rumors (including a theory that *spoiler spoiler spoiler* since eccleston is leaving after one season he might turn out to really be the master impersonating the doctor after all [bleh!] *end spoiler end spoiler end spoiler*) aren't really true.
"doctor who" rules. woo hoo!

I think over here in Canada we've had a Doctor Who show that I'm pretty sure is new for a while now.

Gonna have to find a primer on Dr. Who some day... have absolutely no idea how to get into this series or what's going on with it.

Speaking of primers or lack thereof, all I know of Doctor Who is some sort of made-for-tv movie that came out on Fox (if memory serves me well) in the early 90's. Anyone else remember this, or am I hallucinating this memory? It was a pretty blatantly American version, and the Doctor and the Master were after some atomic clock or something. I thought it was pretty rad, or rather, my early teenage self thought it was pretty rad.

I used to watch Dr. Who pretty often back in the day. It aired on our PBS channel every Sunday afternoon, yes indeedy. *pauses to cackle and meditate in rocking chair* The theme music (sort of a loose term there) and swirly-weird opening credits sequence are STILL stuck in my head.
I'll definitely give the new version a shot if I get the opportunity though.

looking to get into doctor who? the reference guide can be helpful. www.drwhoguide.com/who.htmthe downside is that it references EVERY story (save really recent novels and some of the new series) by giving a complete plot breakdown and everything. but it can be invaluable and informative if you don't have any way (other than buying the dvds) to see the old shows. outpost gallifrey is probably the biggest and best doctor who news/reference/review site out there, so that's fun as well. www.drwhoguide.com/who.htma LOT of stuff, so be prepared. gosh, i love doctor who. sadly, it seems like it'll be a while until we get an easy way to view doctor who. i mean, you can download it via bit torrent if you do that sort of thing, but in terms of watching it on the "telly" or on dvds, we're probably in for a wait. i don't mind getting the region 2 dvds and watching them on my computer, but i want them all NOW! and yes: in 1996 fox tried to bring doctor who over here with what's known as the "fox telemovie." i was psyched and taped it and watched it and loved it, but i guess the ratings weren't great enough to get it picked up. a shame, really, because paul mcgann was a fab 8th doctor and eric roberts was great as the master. the whole cast was great, actually, and i thought it had a proper blend of american and british humor. but you can't please everyone, i guess.

woo hoo! big weekend for deliveries! birthdays, babies, and (somewhat MOST importantly) i got home saturday to find my box set of the first season of the new 'doctor who' on my doorstep, packed in a nicely-done tardis shape.
like all things 'doctor who' you either like it or you don't. what i've seen of this new series (and thanks to my hacked dvd player i can watch in comfort now versus hunched at the computer desk) is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. and i might add that i skipped ahead to the regeneration scene at the very end of the season (ah, spoiler) and not only is eccleston's departure tear-inducing, but tenant's first few seconds are completely brilliant. "ah, yes. bar-ce-lona! *grin*"
pure genius. highly recommended in february, where america gets the dvd release. i hope i get my toy sonic screwdriver tomorrow in the mail. happy holidays!
