I caught an interesting article the other day, concerning some of the classic TV shows, and whether or not they would be released on DVD. The article focused on WKRP in Cincinnati, but had significant implications on what TV shows may (or may not) ever make it to a DVD shelf near you. Apparently, for WKRP, there are licensing issues behind some of the background music played during the episodes (does anyone remember the "Tiny Dancer" episode? Does anyone even remember WKRP?). Well, since the show was laden with a lot of rock music (not unexpected, for a TV show based upon a RADIO station), it may be too expensive to issue the shows on DVD. American Dreams is another example of where this could be an issue. For some shows, they're looking to just substitute some of the music with less expensive songs. My question is this... do you think the studios should release the DVD sets with editing to keep the costs in line, or keep them off the shelves? I'm glad this isn't an issue with West Wing - it looks like they've come through with an April release, for the next season

that crap is so freaking annoying. (substitute freaking for 100 other more appropriate words) I know we all hate queen of the damned. But it had exactly the same problems, the music in the movie, and the soundtrack are two totally seperate things. What is that crap?! I wish people'd get off their high horses, and every once in a while do things for the fans instead of the money. It irritates me to no end, and makes me want to stop supporting certain people/companies. Although, from what I understand, in most circumstances, its the label not the band, am i right? someone chime in that knows.

I hate it when these DVDs don't even have the theme song to their name. Case in point, the Married with Children DVDs, it just has the hideous cacophony of the music without the vocals.

That was one of the issues with Freaks & Geeks, right? Because the show used an insane amount of music (like 150 songs over 19 episodes, or something), it took forever to get the rights to use all of them in a DVD. I guess my line of thinking is that if they can go to that much trouble for a cancelled show that only had 19 episodes (though with an extremely devoted cult following), they can do it for other shows if they bother to put the effort in. I'm one of those people who wants to have his cake and eat it too, I suppose. One of my favorite shows, Scrubs, also uses a great deal of music in episodes, and that's coming to DVD in May. I'm sure it's different for current, popular shows, but still. Bottom line, I'd rather have the original music intact, but if it was really compromise or nothing, I'd accept replacements. I wouldn't be happy about it, but if that's what it took for me to get my hands on a DVD set of The Adventures of Pete & Pete, I'd put aside my principles. -D

these producers put a ton of time and effort (i'd hope) trying to pick the right music for the mood. if it aint there the second time around in a media thats specifically for posterity(right word) that is really a travesty imo.

I think that's the big problem. Despite the F&G cancellation, it has a pretty substantial fanbase so decent sales are, if not guaranteed, at least worth the risk. It's a bit more of a gamble to anticipate how Perfect Strangers is going to fare, so it's tougher for the studio to pony up the cash and expect a return. My personal boondoggle on TV DVDs is whether I want to replace my happy memories of certain shows with more mature revalations about what I was actually watching. For example, the first season of The Greatest American Hero was just released. Now, this was pretty seminal viewing after school in my formative years. Do I really want to jeopardize warm, fuzzy memories of those afternoons by spending my money and discovering it to be idiotic trash? who could it be? believe it or not it's just Al

I loved Greatest American Hero when I was younger, but I fear that it did not age well. Because of that, I'm not going to buy it. Although, apparently the box set has the never-before aired pilot of Greatest American Heroine ... that may be worth a rental...

Oh, and by the way, for the record... I'd be disappointed if the music had to be changed for a DVD release, but I'd probably still consider buying an edited TV show.
But there would be a limit... if I wanted to get Miami Vice (for example), and they had replaced Smuggler's Blues, or In the Air Tonight, I'd probably hold out. Some songs are just so engrained into my memory with certain episodes, that I'd be frustrated that a noticable change had been made.
Or, for example, if WKRP was released, but Tiny Dancer was replaced with something in the public domain (say, Frere Jacques), the whole episode would take on a new feel.
So, bottom line... if I'm gonna notice it, I want the studio to make sure they grab the rights for it...
