Well I was bored today, so I decided to browse at the local Best Buy for anything unusual or cult-ish when lo and behold I come across a long lost memory from my past: Eerie Indiana! I remember when I was a kid/young teen this series seriously freaked me out, especially the title sequence. Something about the show was like a car wreck, horrible and mobid but you just can't look away.
Well I bought it (just $23.99 for the whole series 19 episodes!) and started watching a few episodes and they were just as good as I remembered. The thing that I noticed the second time around that I didn't notice when I was a kid was that the creators added little touches to give the series an otherworldly feel. For example, the lighting when it is not filled with shadows is bathed in a somewhat foggish/angelic light. Also I noticed that the characters are slightly distorted charicatures of real people, kind of like from that "Black Hole Sun" video by Soundgarden.
Three more events from one episode made me take even more notice. In a classroom scene a teacher is introducing a new student, and the teacher looks a little bit off. I wondered why but then I noticed that she had some odd brown/black makeup lightly touched around her eye making her look just ever so slightly like a tired zombie. Not enough to notice conciously, but enough to give you a weird feeling when you see her.
In another scene they begin with a camera held on a spider's web in broad daylight, and then pan over to the main characters talking. I thought I heard something unusual, so I scanned the DVD back, turned up the volume and listened closely. As the camera starts to pan, you can hear a faint high pitched voice that is saying "Help me, help meeeeeeee!" as if a fly was calling for help, nice touch hehe.
In the final scene in the episode, the main character gets a sweet kiss from his first love - in a GRAVEYARD. Anyways, as they part and the main character starts to walk home with his buddy, far in the background you can see the Grim Reaper just casually strolling along the sidewalk, scythe and all.
These are things that I never noticed as a kid, but I think it shows that the creators of the show had a great morbid sense of humor and a powerful attention to detail. I consider this show a long lost cult classic, that was way before its time.
Now after all that rambling, anyone else remember this great show?? ;D
