That's right, Sci-Fi Channel, after over 200 episodes, have decided NOT to renew their contract and order more series of Stargate SG-1.
Although it might not be the end, it certainly is as far as Sci-Fi Channel is concerned.
The chief reason cited is failing ratings, however, rumour has it that they are backing their own horse Battlestar Galactica over SG-1 which they do not own any rights to (MGM produce the show and own it wholly).

Well, Stargate HAS been taking something of a slide lately (haven't we done these alternate universe/time travel/omnipotent alien things enough yet?). But still... I spit upon the new Battlestar Galactica and all that is associated with it. Ptoo. Ptoo. "Hey, here's an idea: let's start our show with the holocaustic destruction of the human race. It'll be done by robots that can look just like people. We'll show one of them breaking a baby's neck." "Good idea! Then we'll kill half the major characters just as people start to like them!" "Yeah! And then we'll eviscerate some kittens." "Yeah."

Stargate SG-1, despite having had more flavoursome years, hasn't gone off yet.
Adding Ben Browder and Claudia Black was a gamble which paid off. Black's character (Vala) was really great and Browder's Mitchell showed potential (though was burdened with his first series of having "I'm NOT Jack O'Neill" syndrome).
Its a shame that Sci-Fi decided against renewing. I mean, seriously, if they can find time for wrestling, they could have found time for what is one of the better sci-fi programmes out there.
As to BSG, this is simply the best sci-fi show on TV at the moment and I'd be interested to know your reasons why you dislike it so.

I think I more or less gave them already. Mostly I feel two hours is long enough for an elimination movie of the "the enemy looks just like us" stripe. I just don't care to watch it for longer than that (though yes, I did sit all the way through the introductory miniseries in hopes it would get better).

I can't really comment because it was a long time ago since I saw the mini. Let me tell ya that the series is amazing. Its quality TV with or without the sci-fi.

I've seen it more recently than DTH and I'm really scratching my head as to who these main characters who've been killed off are- the main twelve or so characters have survived from the beginning of the mini-series all the way to now.
Not really. Unless a robot breaking a baby's neck is reason enough for you to dislike a show, I don't know. And like I said above, you're miles off by saying half the characters died- I don't recall more than a couple dying in the mini-series, and surely the fact the producers had made you care about those characters gave their deaths more importance than the traditional red shirt death in TV sci-fi?
Battlestar Galactica is, like I said in another thread, my favourite TV show of the last five years, the best sci-fi maybe ever (certainly since the late 70s), a deep, interesting show that doesn't pander to the usual conventions (treknobabble, for one) and has the best characterisations and plots of any show on TV at the moment.

Excuse me if I shan't cry over the demise of a show that SciFi chose over Farscape.
As for BSG, it certainly is a dark show, and that isn't everyone's cup o' tea. Perfectly fine for Shalen to have her opinion like that -- after all, it's not like it got all roses and champaigne after the miniseries.
I would say that the miniseries, in comparison to the show, was long, plodding and lacked the polish that they grew into. It was a few hours of setup but very little delivery. I'd suggest just watching the first couple episodes of season one (especially "33") to give the actual series a fair shake. There's even humor and everything.
