Well, I'm in heaven.
That's absolutely a perfect way to do it... HBO is great at that sort of thing, and a miniseries or series > condensed movie format.
Woohoo!

They stole my idea... that is, doing a tv series based on a fantasy novel series and making each book=1 season.
Beyond that, haven't read this series (I might have to check it out!) but the show definitely sounds intriguing. Now if only I had HBO.

The worst thing I can say about the idea of adapting the books into a show is that I want to be involved. I always felt that, when I had the money and experience, that I could spearhead a TV adaptation of SoIaF, and HBO has beaten me to it. And considering the show will be shot in Europe and/or New Zealand, there's no chance of me being even a production assistant on the show.
Another thing that I did since I started reading the series was think of who I would cast for each character. I have developed quite a cast list as I have read these books; my ideas will probably never happen, cause it involves popular actors that wouldn't want to commit to a long-term TV show.
For instance, I always thought Rober Baratheon should be played by either John Goodman or Oliver Platt. Good choices, in my mind, but neither will probably be cast.

I could see either of those for Robert. What are some of your other choices? I just started thinking about this, and started taking some of my favorites from Rome and trying to find them slots No real success yet, but hey.

I never really got into Rome; I watched the first episode, shrugged to myself, and haven't watched another. My sis did buy the first season on DVD, though, and with all the acclaim the show has recieved, I'm tempted to give the show another shot. And since you asked, Lissa, here be some other casting ideas: - Ned Stark: Bill Paxton, or maybe Bill Pullman - Catelyn Stark: Kate Winslet - Cersei Lannister: I'll go the obvious route here and pick Cate Blanchett - Tyrion Lannister: Peter Dinklage. He's been in a bunch of movies, but it was his role in Find Me Guilty that convinced me. He plays a defense attorney for Vin Diesel's mob family, and he played the character with such charisma. It was how I imagine Tyrion. - Tywin Lannister - Clancy Brown. Pure stern badass. - Sandor Clegane: Tom Waits...and not just because I'm a huge fan of his, and feel obligated to fit him in somewhere. I sincerely think he can do the gritty, mysterious persona (basically the persona he exudes in his music). The only problem is that he may be too old for the character. - Littlefinger: Chris Barrie, aka Rimmer (his character on the super-awesome show Red Dwarf (see my avatar)) - Varys: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, or maybe Meat Loaf. There are more; some I can't think of at the moment, others I don't want to add all in one post so as to avoid looking like a complete nerd.
